A question about : Parking in Cardiff

Hi there,

I have booked Travelodge at cardiff central on the 3rd of Jan. The travelodge does not have a parking of its own but suggests that there are pay and display and also NCP nearby.

I wanted to know that how much is cost of parking say for one day and wha are the parking regulations like timings etc? And how is the parking situation in Cardiff as I havent been there before? Is there a possibility of a free car parking upto a mile from the travelodge?

I know too many questions...... but please help!!

  • I hope you enjoy Cardiff when you arrive. This link to Cardiff Council's website might help https://www.cardiff.gov.uk/content.as...4048,4194,4255
  • NCP parking will be an arm (and possibly a leg). What about ringing the Travelodge directly to see if they have arrangements with anyone?
  • You can park for Ј2.40 for 24 hours in the city centre - if you buy parking vouchers, know where to park and are very lucky. Each voucher costs Ј1.20 (might be Ј1.40 now) for up to 5 hours, with a 10 hour limit (it's free 6.30pm -8am). Not all streets are the same price - some are one voucher per hour. The nearest 5-hour spaces to the Travelodge are just across the river from the stadium, just south of the hotel near the Novotel, or near the City Hall (but that's a fair walk from the hotel).
You have to buy the vouchers from newsagents, post offices or garages.
Cardiff Rugby club (next to the MillStad) also offers reasonably cheap parking.
Avoid the NCPs which cost the earth.
  • Just to clarify
Cardiff Rugby club is accessed on Westgate Street and is right next to the main steps of the Stadium opposite Quay Street, there should be a wee man in a box on the gate and you drive down and park under the stadium, pretty safe parking spot and used to free on Sundays (or was it Sat afternoon) and after 6pm
I think the 5 hour spaces reffered to opposite the stadium are on Fitzhammon Embankment but you'll be lucky. There are 5 hour spaces on Park Place (only one side of the road the other side is 2 hours I think. And all around city hall Alexandra gardens is parking with long times probably 5 hours again finding a space is another matter.
On Charles Street out side the Friend's Meeting House (which is on your right as you're driving in) is a loading bay free from 5PM (Mon - Sat) free all day on Sunday.
My parking advice for Cardiff is very rusty but I would be going to Taff Embankment & surrounding streets (eg cymmer st) which is a good neighbourhood and I think you can park there for free with no permits. You might also check Taffs Mead Embankment (to the North of Taff Embankment) This is not far only 10 mins walk at the most.
If you have heavy luggage you can park briefly (and I mean briefly) at the rear of the travel lodge. They might even have a rear door.
You should also find a spot for free on Ninian Park Road (there are a few there among the permit bays) 10 mins walk.
And if all else fails and you do want a free space you could go to Richmond Road look for space without bay markings, or go (from here) along Northcote street turn right into City Road turn left into Arran Street/Treharris Street and look here for a space, this will be a 15 - 20 min walk back.
And like wise if you are prepared to walk that 15 mins you could park in the other direction, County Hall (Schooner Way), which has free parking day and night and is about the same distance as Arran Street would be, but the walk won't be half as interesting. However, if you park here you will be 2 minutes away from the Butetown link road (lower/south circular road) which will take you to the M4 nice and easy.
  • Hello,
Funnily enough I returned yesterday from Cardiff where my family and I had a bargain break at the Cardiff Central Travelodge, and am sore enough to tell you all about my woes!It was a really cheap break and we did all we could to keep costs down. There is no car park associated with the hotel as it is based in a great central location. We parked in the Wood Street NCP right behind the hotel at a cost of Ј10 ish for 24 hours, only to discover on checking out that some b****** had broken into our car, smashing the window and stealing the stereo and CDs! My husband, I ,two children and luggage had to wait for seven hours for someone to fix the window before we drove home to Bournemouth!
Two other cars had been targetted that night in the car park and apparently this is a very regular occurence so I really cannot recommend that you park there. We were told that 12 different people had been prosecuted last month for crimes in that car park alone! On the plus side, the guy was clearly caught on CCTV, so fingers crossed. I must say that this seems like sod's law - a really carefully budgetted for break cancelled out by an insurance claim, Ј100 excess and loss of no claims!
Ho hum - the break was great up til that point - panto and Doctor Who exhibition hightly recommended!
  • train station is about 30 secs away, might be worth parking in cathays or even heath and catching the train to central station.
That way parking is free, and if you get on at cathays the conductor rarley gets to you in time as its so close!
  • Thanks everynr for your valueable suggestions. I am back from cardiff and had a wonerful time as the weather was lovely yesterday-- sunny, the whole day.
I managed to park at the begining of the Bute street which was free parking and travel lodge from there was only a 7 min walk.
    Thanks again
  • Pub on the mud?
    Inn on the River?
  • Personally if I had a car I wouldnt take it to Cardiff. Like some of the posters have revealed, it isn't a nice or safe place to go.
  • Can anyone recommed any parking near the univeristy great hall as i have just bought tiickets for the kaiser chiefs on the 9th march
    Thanks
