A question about : Owe Money to Dealer?

Hi,

Just looking for a bit of advice about a recently bought second hand car.

The car value was 8500, and i paid a deposit of Ј2500. when i went to collect the car a pay the balance the dealer had the invoice made out for Ј5900 (Ј100 less than expected), i said nothing.

Since then i have received a couple of letters asking for the oustanding Ј100, that last of which threatens legal action.

The questions is, do i pay or am i liable to end up in court (in Northern Ireland if that matters).

Cheers

Best answers:

  • Do you have paperwork for the deposit giving the full price as Ј8500, rather than the Ј8400 you paid?
I very much doubt that legal action would actually follow, and given that you've got an invoice for the amount you've paid, it probably won't go very far. But good luck with any problems you might have from the car...
I guess it comes down to personal morality - if the Ј100 was the other way around, would you raise it as an issue?
  • You agreed to buy a car for Ј8,500. So far you have paid Ј8,400.
You still owe Ј100, which could turn into quite a bit more if legal expenses are added.
  • If you agreed 8500 then thats what you should pay. Why didn't you sort it out at the time if you knew it was the wrong price and why not pay up when asked?
  • Wind up, surely!
Why would you think you should not pay?
If it goes to court how will you explain it? Have you considered the legal costs you will need to pay? You can certainly forget having any repairs from the dealer.
You paid deposit, dealer made invoice, albeit Ј100 short of what should have been paid, you say nothing trying to chance your arm hoping you got a bonus out of it.
Your relationship with the dealer will go a lot further if you just pay what you owe. Who knows you might want to use them again
