A question about : Opera in Prague advice needed

We are off to Prague next week (brrrr!) we have booked tickets to the opera (state opera).
I have never Been to Prague or the opera before so not sure what to expect. From what I gather its recommended that you make an effort and dress up a bit.

One thing I am struggling to decide on is where to eat and if we do before/after. It starts at 7pm, do they do pre opera meals in Prague.... Any recommendations would be very welcome title=Jumping

  • I have been to the opera and ballet several times in Prague. Yes, some people dress up but it is not the norm. You will need warm clothes to get there in! I normally wore smart trousers and top and used a pretty pashmina. Incidentally, you will have a huge choice to buy a pashmina at a great price while you are there.
Food is available everywhere at all times. Up to you whether you eat before or after the performance.
I am sure you will love it. We saw The Magic Flute at The Estates Theatre. That is the venue where it was first performed and conducted by Mozart himself. Amazing.
  • I saw Carmen in Prague a couple of years ago. Enjoy!
  • Hi
The State Opera House is right at the top of Wenceslas Sq so plenty of places to pick from for food around there.
When we went I work black trousers and a smart jumper but there were plenty of people there in jeans too.
    Enjoy!
  • Thanks everyone, we had an amazing time and the opera was fantastic. A great way to see the Opera if you cant afford London prices, the guide you get and drinks from the bar were also very cheap.
We dressed up as did lots of others and it really made the occasion (But you were right there were lots of people that were more casual)
Prague has to be one of the cheapest holidays we have had for a while. (We did stay in a lest touristy area which helped, it actually had a much better selection of quirky restaurants full of locals)
