A question about : Old thread: 2012 Forum redesign

Hi folks,

A couple of weeks ago when we launched the new masthead, we changed the forum to become fixed width. We got a bit of a barrage from some regular users about it.

We've listened to some of the feedback and made some tweaks which give more post space while still remaining fixed width.

DO NOTE WE STILL PLAN A FULL REDESIGN, THESE ARE JUST MINOR QUICK FIXES TO HELP

The plan is to hopefully switch the current version to the new version in a week - but we wanted to feedback first.

Please Try The New Version and Feedback

Click this to switch to new version

As always it'd be great if you used it for a couple of days to get used to it, rather than just instant reaction

Click this to switch back (if you want to - no need)

You need to be logged in for the switch to work

A couple of important points before you feedback

1. Please only feedback on the difference between these two version - not the stretchy version - that's not changing and will remain full supported, though not the default.

2. When we auto-switch people the plan is only to switch those already on the fixed version

3. If you're on the stretchy version and want to try this, use this link if you then want to switch back to stretchy

4. We will listen to suggestions, but these are only quick tweaks at the moment, a full redesign is coming, so we can't do anything major.

5. Please report any glitches

Thanks for your time

Martin

IMPORTANT! PLEASE REMEMBER WE'VE ASKED FOR FEEDBACK IS BETWEEN THE CURRENT FIXED WIDTH VERSION AND THE NEW FIXED WIDTH VERSION. IF YOU'VE BEEN USING THE STRETCHY THEN FEEL FREE TO COMMENT BUT PLEASE LET US KNOW OR IT OFTEN MAKES NO SENSE

Best answers:

  • Hi folks, sorry I pressed the button on posting before the actual technology had been switched on should work now.
And OneYorkshireLass - we hope the redesign will make it much easier to use. Yet we will allow those who want to keep the old style.
  • Yeah, I'm afraid for me, it looks a but ugly.
PLus the banners across the top are messed up for me as well.
  • It does look quite nice but I prefer the username part at the side of the post rather than at the top.
  • I quite like it
  • ohhh me like it,i use the comp board daily and this looks so much cleaner and up to date
  • I don't like it, sorry. There's too much white space with nothing going on, it'd be murder looking at it if I had a hangover!
Edit - I can't switch back, you tricked me!
  • but the thanks button is missing
  • Distinct vertical striped shirts suit you better and have almost become a trademark, the one you're wearing in the masthead looks like you've just got out of bed.
  • I am not a fan either, The old version was fine for me and I agree that the replacement seems flatter or more bland.
I like the sticky pin effect, but that's about all.
I would prefer you stick to the original, but maybe do something with new colours if you want to make a difference. Subtle, though.
  • A rather glaring glitch with some board announcements. Excessive white space and title pushed to one side.
  • Hi Martin..... sorry I'm going to be a bit negative so I'll start with the positive side! It's better than the original version but I'm afraid on a widescreen there's still a pretty big block of "nothingness" at either side.
I'm also having problems with the mastheads (both currently & on the new version) - I don't know if it's the distance between the links to the menu at the top where you click to move to another part of the forum (eg if I was trying to click onto "site feedback" on this page) & the masthead - but often the banners drop down their pick lists which is really frustrating.
  • The new sticky "pin" icon is vastly better though.
When viewing a board index, I would still prefer it if the backgroud colour of a sticky thread could be a different colour, distinguishing it even more from the running threads on the board. Some forums do this.
