A question about : Oh how we change and grow!

Hello title=Smile I signed up here last month, and haven't posted that much as about 2 weeks after I did sign up here, the laptop I'd had for 18 months decided to pack it in, it was a Dell laptop that I'd paid 250 pounds for! My ex(who I'm on good terms with most of the time!) has kindly let me use his when he isn't using it. Anyway! I came on here to say that my first payment to StepChange goes out on the 10th May and from then on I will feel like I'm in charge of the situation! So much has changed already, with me being a bargain hunter even more, and I've just had the past week off work, which has been so good for me as I hadn't had a week off since October. I decided to start buying all my fruit and veg from a local greengrocer in the village which is a 20 minute walk for me (I don't drive) and I must say, I can't believe I've been paying over the odds for my fruit and veg in the supermarkets. I got a lovely big bag of bananas for 50p each, strawberries for 50p per punnet, broccoli was 79p, and the quality is amazing!!! I also got a decent sized bag of tomatoes for 69p too! I basically have to now live on my wage, and nothing else, and what I've realised is now I have to keep track of what I spend and cut back etc, I really do realise how much money I did throw away and how careless I really was with it. I didn't really start spending on my credit cards until I had split with my husband, and I kinda had a nervous breakdown from it, which I've since found out that alot of people have done the same! I love coming here and seeing all the advice and tips, etc, and this week I am going to look for a flat for myself, as our house hasn't sold(been on the market for nearly 2 years) and my ex's girlfriend has finally got a steady job, so he's gonna move her in here, and I'm going to go. I just need my own life, and I'm happy to leave and leave them to it, the house is in both our names, he's actually in alot of debt too, and I told him about going with Stepchange, and he said he will think about it. I just hope everything just keeps moving forward, I just want to live my life. I'm also quite enjoying being the bargain hunter and saver, feels like a new side to me!!! Sorry for the long post!

Best answers:

  • Is any of the debt you or your ex-husband have secured on the house?
Apart from the house are you and your husband financially separated, no joint accounts, additional card holders on credit cards?
  • We have no debts secured on the house, and we've always been financially separated. I've always had my own bank account and my own credit cards.
  • Welcome to the forum, you really are embracing being a money saver, well done and keep it up
It makes me feel sick the money I have wasted on *&^% I didn't need and the interest it cost me, so now I try not to dwell on it.
I had severe post natal depression and racked up the massive debt, it was borderline post partum psychosis, I thought if I didn't buy my baby EVERYTHING he would die, or be stolen or be taken off me, because I was a bad mother. I bought 5 prams, it took about 2 years to recover then the debt grew with a cycle of consolidation and cash advances so there would be enough to pay the minimums. so I know how major life changes can affect you.

  • Yeah I actually get a big rush out of money saving, I really love going to Home and Bargains, and Iceland and other places!!! I work for Tesco, but I don't shop there as I find it too expensive even with my discount. I shop normally at Morrisons or Asda or Aldi when I can get there.
Yeah I bought clothes, food, just anything, probably "comfort buying" it's strange to look back as I was just wasting money Never mind, it does get me down sometimes but that's natural I'm sure.
  • The only thing in our name is the mortgage, but that's it. I'm actually glad we've always been financially separate!!! It's made things easier!
