A question about : NPower ... billing and refund issue

I left NPower in November 2013, received final bill January 2014 ... then in August 2014 received a refund from them of over Ј120 stating that they had reviewed the account and had overcharged us. A few weeks later we received another letter saying that we owed them money but not to worry they had written off Ј82 because of late billing so we were all square. Today I receive a letter saying that we owe them Ј133 which they will take from our account on 16th March (even though the DD was cancelled over a year ago). I called NPower who said what happened was that the account had been in credit which they refunded then they recalculated the bill using readings rather than estimates and we now owe Ј66 (what happened to Ј133? the customer services rep has no idea where that figure came from). Now I remember submitting the final readings personally when we switched, I also remember my login to NPower online so go there to figure out what's going on.

So, what appears to have happened is that they sent us the final bill (Ј149) then charged us twice for the final bill, then refunded the final bill twice, leaving us Ј129 in credit which they refunded. They then charged us the final bill again, then wrote off the electricity part of the bill, leaving Ј66 which they state they now want from us.

Now being 15 months after the energy was actually used, and I read that under Ofgem guidelines energy companies should not be demanding payment for fuel used over 12 months ago.

Your thoughts?

  • I have had a letter detailing a very similar situation today. Left Nov 14, letter in Sept apologising for not settling the account and paid me Ј185....something, I don't recall anything being written off at that time. Today they tell me they wrote off Ј173.69 but claim I owe Ј160. It's weird, my first thought was that it was a scam... but the letter look legit. I guess I ring and ask for details/evidence as I can't get my head around it and understandably don't trust then not to continue screwing it up.
