A question about : Not a sandwich!

Here's an idea which got me thinking from someone else's post on here. We are both retired (early) and find we are preparing lunch and supper at home most days. I like cooking in the evening but am thoroughly bored of sandwiches at lunchtime. With the help of you guys I could compile a list of quick, tasty, healthy alternatives to the dreaded sandwich. Each time there is a new suggestion I can update this Original Post. Many thanks & I look forward to hearing from lots of you title=Have

  • Although not retired, we work from home, and so I have the same problem.
    We have - cheese on toast, scrambled egg, poached egg, beans on toast (have you come across those Five Beans tins?), bacon butties, and for sandwiches I'll buy nice crusty breadcakes just for a change from boring old bread. Once a week I do keep fit in the morning, and there's a sandwich shop just round the corner so I pick something up from there, which at least makes a change from having to make the d**n things!
  • I'd welcome an alternative to sandwiches for a change too, but there aren't enough calories in the alternatives above.
    Target: About 1000kcals for 75pence, low in salt, fat and sugar, as quick to prepare as sandwiches, and doesn't use non perishables unless they can be bought in the quantities required.
    I think that's a tall order, or I would be eating something else already.
  • Toasted tea-cake, crumpets and my favourite potato cakes. :-)
  • Omelettes, salads, things on Ryvita, left overs from previous night, cheese and biscuits and an apple or pear, home made soup, lovely grub
  • I would look at restaurant starters/light bite menus.
    So things like pate, quiche, brushetta, tapas, etc.
    I find pinterest.com good for food inspiration
  • I am gluten intolerant so can't eat sanwiches.Avocados are my saviour add prawns or nuts and I find them quite filling. Also sandwiches without the bread and add nachos so ham lettuce and nachos. Soup is also another good one. Nachos with grated and grilled cheese, dips with crudities or a jacket potato also serves for lunch.
  • How about:
    Pasta salad
    Rice with mixed veg cooked in stock or with some herbs for more flavour could also add bits of ham/bacon etc.
    Couscous again cooked in stock etc with veg.
    Roast veg
    Smoked salmon with cream cheese on blini or bagel (any number of fillings options for these or with salad if you don't want the carbs.
    Smoked mackerel salad.
    Sardines/canned pilchards on toast.
    Homemade coleslaw with salad.

  • smoked mackrel pate (Smoked mackrel mashed up with sour cream or similar and bit of lemon juice)
    Pipperade (onions peppers tomatoes garlic - add an egg or two)

  • We seem to usually have Bachelors cuppa-soup recently. It's really lovely, not like cup soups used to be. (I don't work for Bachelors!)
    We generally have bread and some type of cheese with it... it isn't a sandwich if you don't fold it over is it?

  • If you are near to Staffordshire :Staffordshire oatcakes with fillings such as / or combinations of bacon, cheese , tomato, baked beans, sausage. (For those who haven't tried them, they are not dry biscuits, but more like savoury pancakes made on a griddle from oatmeal.)
  • You can't beat a deep fried mars bar in toasted brown bread. Filling and nutritious.
    It has to be brown bread because white bread isn't all that good for you.
  • I'm confused. The task is to identify alternatives to sandwiches but "bacon butties" and "toasties" are listed as possible options. To me a "bacon butty" is another name for a bacon sandwich and a "toasty" a filling inside a toast sandwich. Are there alternative definitions that I am unaware of?
