A question about : Car insurance limbo
I'm in a bit of a mess of my own making - I don't expect any sympathy but would be most grateful for any help!
I have been caught out recently because I needed to report an accident to my car insurance, but in this process, discovered that when I renewed last year I hadn't disclosed three points on my licence from late 2013.
The insurers have asked for a photocopy of my licence, and since then I have heard very little. I don't want to pre-empt them, but there's a small chance they may void my policy.
My car was scrapped after the accident, so I cancelled my insurance. But now I am looking at getting another motor. My question is, if I take out a new insurance policy now, and my old insurers void my old policy (unlikely but possible), would my new insurance also be voided? Or, could I quietly cancel my new insurance and avoid being voided a second time?
Best answers:
- If they void your policy, then you will have to disclose this to your new insurer.
This may result in them reacting as you say (especially if they don't insure anyone with a voided policy in their history). So a quiet cancellation is a good idea. The cancellation costs will be less than the problems you'll face with 2 voided policies on your record.
Unless your current insurer has a policy of not covering anyone with similar convictions to you then hopefully the worst that they will do is ask for a higher premium (backdated!) to cover what you should have paid. (Unless there is more to the reason why you "forgot" your conviction) - The three points are only for an SP30 (at renewal they asked about motoring convictions, not mentioning penalty points, and for reasons of genuine stupidity on my part I didn't make the link between this and my points)....
