  • The Realness
    20-22 November
Big Broad Productions and The Big House are joining forces for their first co-production, The Realness, a new urban musical about a bad boy's struggles on the road from zero to hero. When some people won't believe you've changed, and others don't want to let you change, it isn't easy to make a new start. Jay Johnson is fresh out of prison and determined never to go back inside, but for all his efforts to stay on track, he finds himself making a detour in the wrong direction. Finally he's faced with the hardest choice of his life and only then does he understand what he has to do to change things for real.
With an upbeat score ranging from rap to reggae, gospel to grime, The Realness is a new musical with book by Maureen Chadwick & David Waton and music & lyrics by Kath Gotts. The show is directed by Maggie Norris and features music tracks produced by Semothy Jones (Plan B) and choreography by Carrie-Anne Ingrouille (Some Like It Hip-Hop).

THE KINKS exploded onto the 60s music scene with a raw, energetic new sound that rocked a nation. But how did that happen, where exactly did they come from and what happened next?
With Music and Lyrics by Ray Davies, a new Book by Joe Penhall and Direction by Edward Hall, SUNNY AFTERNOON depicts the rise to stardom of THE KINKS. Set against the back-drop of a Britain caught mid-swing between the conservative 50s and riotous 60s, this production explores the euphoric highs and agonising lows of one of Britain's most iconic bands and the irresistible music that influenced generations.
This 'exhilarating, hugely enjoyable new musical' (Financial Times) features many of the bands hits, including: YOU REALLY GOT ME, WATERLOO SUNSET, DEDICATED FOLLOWER OF FASHION, ALL DAY AND ALL OF THE NIGHT, LOLA, SUNNY AFTERNOON many more.

The Hidden Notes offers a window into a new and unique sound world. It is a celebration of the saxophone and all the beautiful colours that are hidden just beneath the surface.
The project has grown out of an in-depth study of advanced saxophone techniques, and is the culmination of several years' work spent developing a tonal approach to multiphonics and overtone patterns. Through this process Martin has discovered many beautiful and affecting sounds, which he has used as a starting point for a new body of compositions. These sounds range from ethereal, delicate two-note whispers to rich full chords, earthy split-notes and powerful metallic dissonance.
Circular breathing then allows for the development of complex continuous rhythmic patterns. All of this combined with the natural sound of the saxophone creates a rich and varied soundscape, opening up many new exciting rhythmic and textural possibilities.
Metamorphic are a contemporary song-based jazz/folk sextet who play original music composed by pianist Laura Cole. The group's second album, Coalescence, was released on the F-ire label in June 2013 to critical acclaim, garnering four-star reviews from the likes of John Fordham in the Guardian, Peter Quinn at Jazzwise, and Brian Morton at Jazz Journal; Brian Morton later named Coalescence as his Album of the Year 2013.
