A question about : NHS bursary, owing back Money

Hi all

My partner has recently had a letter from the nhs saying she owes them back a large amount of money, to the sum of near 1.5k!
They have obviously worked out the sums wrong and overpaid her somehow!
Obviously this is not her fault and trusts what they pay her is the correct amount.
She now has to pay back this money and it is really stressing her out where she will find it!
Is there anything she can do about this as it is a mistake purely on there part?

  • What does she want to do? Not pay it back?

  • course she wants to pay it back! its just that it was there mistake, she does not know what the figure will be, its just worked out by them and so trusts them what they pay her, then later on lands with a big bill! which is not fair really!

  • Hiya there's a few things she can do but as it's funded via taxpayers/government money it does have to be repaid but don't panic you won't have to repay in one lumpsum. Firstly contact payroll services and ask for a breakdown of the overpayments. Assuming your partner still works for the trust, she should be able to check online the trusts polices on overpayments. If no joy there ask a line manager to provide them. Once You have all the info work out what she could reasonably afford to have deducted from her wage every month, if the overpayment had been ongoing over a few years it's not unreasonable to ask for a similar period to repay it. Most human resource depts are usually open to sensible repayments. If at this point they're refusing any reasonable offer contact her union rep if she is a member and they will get involved.
  • What mjg said. Plus she should take from this not to be so trusting in the future. Organisations !!!! up all the time, but you do have to pay them back, usually at the most inconvenient time!! Checking this stuff out and keeping on top of your budget should help prevent this happening again.
