A question about : Newborn clothes

Trying to get my head around the sizing of baby clothes (ready for bump due in January)!

From what I can tell, when a baby is born, 0-3 month clothes are actually too big. And there was me foolishly thinking the 0 part meant they would fit a newborn. I have now come across newborn and tiny baby clothes.

Looking at most sizing guides it suggests tiny fits up to 8lb, newborn up to 10lb and then 0-3month fits 10lb to 13lb (ish). I have just researched that a baby will lose some of it's birth weight and then return to it by about 2-3 weeks, meaning most babies will probably need newborn clothes for the first month before 0-3 clothes fit. Does this sound about right?? If so I should probably go and get some more newborn vests and baby grows as I only have 6 of each!

If anyone can remember how long their little one was in newborn clothes before 0-3 it would be much appreciated. Thanks

• Hmm, most people don't bother with the newborn size because they grow out of them within a few weeks, 0-3 aren't that much bigger that they'll be too big for very long and although they do lose a little weight they still grow longer.
• 5-6 weeks in newborn, he was 7lb 13oz but a slow-ish gainer. (He's 24lbs at 21 and a half months) Newborn swamped him in the beginning though
  P.s we had very little newborn, almost all 0-3 because we were told he was gonna be massive. We were donated loads of newborn after he was born
• I had 6 newborn sleepsuits and vests, LO wore them for about 3 weeks. (Born 9lb 2oz).
  I would leave it at that, then see what you need. You can always send OH/family out to buy a pack of newborn sleep suits if you need.

• Plus, different shops tend to have different sizes. My LO was shy of 7lb when born and most 0-3 drowned him, but now he's 8lb 5 at 4 weeks primark 0-3 sleepsuits fit him fine, Next newborn is getting a bit small, but Next 0-3 drowns him. Debenhams and Boots are both a good fit. It's all a bit trial and error really.
• My first popped out at over 10lb, 0-3 only just fitted her. She's still huge now!
  I didn't buy any newborn for number 4, but there was a problem with my health, and I was induced at 37 weeks, she was 7lb something and OH had to go and buy newborn. It depends on all sorts of factors really.
  Best not to buy 'Tiny Baby' unless you know bubba is small (twins etc) and not too much in Newborn as it really doesn't last long. My youngest was 9lb born and wore her sister's old Newborn clothes for about 2 weeks at most!
• I don't want to worry you, but my 'little' one was 10lb 2 born and went straight into 0-3, which I managed to squeeze him into for the first 6 weeks. At 6 weeks old he was busting out of his clothes and I had to unwrap the 3-6 bag!
  My advice would be leave the tags on anything new, and delegate a job of running to the shops to change up or down when you know if you've got a tiddler or a whopper.
  We didn't actually buy anything, we just let everyone know that we were grateful for all hand me downs. Babies grow so quickly that any clothes up to around 9-12 size tend to be in perfect condition as they're not really moving around that much in them until this size.
• I think it is advisable to have a mix of newborn and some 0-3 at first, both my babies were under 6lb and even the newborn was too big at first.
• Oh yeah, forgot to say everywhere different sizing. I had Boots newborn for my 9lb 2 oz.x
• We bought only a handful of clothes before LO was born, mostly in the newborn size. She was under 7lb as she arrived a little early and so they fitted until she was about 6 weeks. 0-3 months would have swamped her.
• Different shops fit different shaped babies as well - I found Primark babygros to be particularly long arms and legs (so they worked brilliantly for my eldest who is long limbed, but were useless on my youngest who is very long bodied).
  I'm not much help on this since both of mine were premature and didn't grow typically (the youngest is in 12-18 month clothes aged 7 months) - but I got a few weeks out of newborn, and a couple of months out of 0-3, and then her growth skyrocketed and she started being well ahead in clothes sizes! Her sister was in newborn for aaaaages (but she was a sub 5lb preemie) before deciding she wasn't much fussed with 6-9 month stuff and almost missing that size out altogether, and then not spending long in 9-12 month clothes either.
  It's a nightmare trying to second guess and plan things out - which is why people usually have mountains of baby clothes they're all too willing to hand down to people barely worn!
• I only have one newborn sleepsuit for my bubba due in 2 weeks time, and have gone straight for 0-3m. I have even packed a couple of 3-6m as my sister had very long babies and her ds went straight into those, but he was 10lb 7oz! As hubby and I are tall we are expecting the same, though you never know!
• I always found Pumpkin Patch sizing and Boots to be the best fitting with my daughter, although Pumpkin Patch can be pricey unless bought in sales!
  However, my daughter was born weighing just 3lb 10oz, measuring 17cm and dropped to 3lb so I really struggled with even the Tiny Baby sizes. Everything hung off her and I remember having to roll sleeves up etc and layer cardigans, going up a size each layer as she was only a few weeks old in winter and none of the coats or snowsuits were small enough.
  I managed to get a tiny baby one at Boots when she was around 6 weeks and till she was ten weeks, has to stuff the feet of it with socks to make it at least look like it fit!
  I was really impressed with the sizing and quality of baby wear from Primarily as well. Cheap enough to keep replacing if you find little one is growing quick but decent quality so lasts if they have slower growth spurts.

  Most of what we already have has been bought by enthusiastic grandparents.
  Think I will go and get a couple more vests and baby grows in newborn just so I can choose some myself. Sounds like she will probably end up using them anyway for a few weeks and if she turns out to be a whopper my cousin is due 2 weeks after me so they will get used
• You can get absolute bargains from Ebay, especially if local so no is postage involved. People sell bundles of unworn or barely worn items with starting prices of 99p.
• I had 6 lb babes and always got good use out of tiny baby clothes.
• I'm due January too. I've been given quite a few baby clothes but may need to buy some extras for all sizes. I'm currently thinking I might wait a while to buy any newborn size and leave them in packaging unwashed with receipt til baby comes. That way I can swap up a size if baby arrives and he's on the large size.
• My son was 6lbs 8.5oz born, wore tiny baby for 8 weeks and spent about 4 weeks in newborn. He was small length wise until 6 months and then shot up.
• Unless you know you will be induced early/have twins then avoid "tiny baby" size. Newborn will fit most average weight babies for a month or so and then into 0-3 months.
  But as many people have said just like adult clothes every store seems to come up different - so it is just about finding what suits your baby's shape.
  Leave the tags on stuff and return/exchange it for different sizes as suits.
  Also some stores do an "Up to 1 month" size - this is really versatile as it fitted my newborn fine and lasted longer than the newborn size.
