A question about : Newbie Gardener

I thought I'd start a thread for first time/newbie gardeners to gain advice from ye experts

I'm a novice, not quite new but way off experienced!
I was looking at the garden last weekend when it was lovely and sunny and thinking that it's time I was doing the odd bit but I don't know what I should be doing when
I grew runner beans this year which were pretty successful & also a few sweet peas which I think are one of my favourite & also pretty easy to grow flowers, apart from the greenfly!

I'm sure there are others who have no idea where to start, what they should be doing when etc so maybe we can get some really practical, simple, beginner's advice here!

So, question 1: what should us novice gardeners be thinking about doing in our gardens over the next few weeks? Bear in mind that many of us will work full time & so if it rains at the weekend it can end up being 3 weeks before you can get something done!

Best answers:

  • You need to tell us more about the garden- e.g. are there any trees/ shrubs? Flowerbeds? Grass?
  • As above, and I will hazard a guess that wallbash doesn't mean its too cold and wet for you, they mean the garden.
  • Ne'er cast a clout, 'till May be out.
  • I seem to remember some kind person listing jobs to do in the garden month by month which might help you. Sorry I can't seem to find it but someone else may remember and post a link for you...
  • This time of year is a good time to cut back trees and shrubs, digging, tidying that kind of thing
  • For new gardeners, I'd suggest Monty Don's The Complete Gardener. YOu can pick up a copy from Amazon for a few quid.
  • Goggle, I've found that thread: The Garden Year 2008 posted by Annie123, very useful! (It's closed now, but a lot of good advice there)

It was in Arkonite-babe's very useful gardening index (and it is!) featured as a sticky at the top of the greenfingered forum index.

Hope that's some help to you, I've earmarked it this time and I'm going to work through it myself!
