A question about : New (Used) Car

Hi,

I am hopefully picking up a car today.

I will insure it immediately when I buy it, and try and tax it.

I can see on the .gov website that I can apply for tax as a new keeper using the V5C/2 code on their website, but will it allow me to do this given that the MID will not have been updated as I would have only just bought the insurance minutes previously. The car is not currently insured by the current owner.

I have googled this, and can only find the new tax rules but can not find the answer re the insurance.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Best answers:

  • I could be wrong, but I think with this continuous insurance thing the insurance is no longer checked as part of the taxing process.
  • The purchase of tax is no longer dependent on insurance ( or mot).
Your insurance will take approximately seven days to hit the MID.
you can purchase online or by phone.
  • the mot is still checked for ved purposes but not insurance
  • The car needs to be MOT'd to get taxed, but not insured. They have other ways for catching you out on that.
  • Thanks for all your replies, much appreciated.
  • Yeah you can tax it it without the insurance showing. I presume thats another earner for the DVLA. Issue a fine if the insurance doesnt show up within a set timeframe?
Make sure you use the new keepers supplement. Otherwise the tax maybe refunded to the previous owner.
  • The tax is supposed to be refunded to the previous owner, that's the point.
As long as you have insured the vehicle then you should be able to tax it whether the computer has been updated or not. However, if the insurance doesn't show up within a certain timeframe and/or does not commence on the day the tax was paid then the tax will be cancelled and you're ready to be plucked by the police.
Yes it's true that you don't need insurance to tax your car but if you drive an untaxed car it invalidates the insurance.
  • I purchased a car from a dealer about 18 months ago. I insured it there and then over the phone. Not sure what the problem is here.
  • Several threads on here about it. And im sure the DVLA site warns you to use the number on the new keepers slip because its slightly different to the main number.
So they know your the new keeper.
  • you should only have the green slip as the previous owner should send the v5c to confirm that the the vehicle has been sold so the refund should go to the precious owner
