A question about : New DLA award today

Today my son was reawarded DLA.. not PIP as it is not yet in our area (Oxfordshire) although he is over 16. His award is 'indefinite'

Potentially his mobility component could be used for a car (me to drive him.. he hasn't the ability), however I am concerned that if he then gets called for the switch to PIP within say the next 12 months, he might lose the entitlement as he qualifies under DLA assessment rules but might not under PIP going by reports!

I am wondering whether it is 'safe' to go for the motability scheme or whether it would be better to use his mobility component to pay privately on finance.. or just try and keep the old banger we are using now and save until it falls apart.

Does anyone have an idea on this? Are all new DLA award recipients going to be recalled shortly (I can't find any time scales for Oxfordshire) or will it be pot luck/ a while.

Really unsure as to how to proceed!
Thanks

Best answers:

  • It depends!
Handing over the entire payment gets you a nice new car, with no issues on repairs or most costs.
Can you hire purchase a car to own in the time in question- debatable though possible.
If you don't especially mind dealing with the occasional unreliability of a second hand car, you can certainly save significantly usually.
Assuming for the moment you can get reasonable car insurance - that can dramatically change the numbers.
Cars under the motability scheme also have various restrictions on use.
Ones you purchase yourself for the money do not.
  • Keeep control, """keeping the old banger you are using now and save until you can afford a replacement""" in about 2 years when you will have Ј6000 to buy & insure a decent and reliable vehicle. During that 2 years you will also save the cost of car tax which you can use to add to the pot or reduce the time you wait, and the additional benefit of a blue badge to aid his mobility, best of luck.
