A question about : New carpet has an Illusion in it leaving us Nauseated

2 days ago we had our whole house recarpeted

For some reason especially when sitting on our sofa viewing our television long white lines constantly appear across the carpet and seem to move from one point to the next, this effect is very nauseating

Sorry I would post a picture but even though I am not a new user it says 'Sorry as a new user you are not allowed to post with links'

have a look at the picture (though it's not as obvious in a picture) and tell me what you think they go up and down in this picture

We informed the shop of the problem and they have given us a slight discount on a replacement, though this is still costing us anotherŠˆ1336

We have also sent the email below to the manufacturer

We feel really hard done by here as though the carpet is the correct colour and texture for us there was no way of knowing that It would give this effect until it was installed, now were not sure what to do next if there is anything we can do ?

Best answers:

  • The carpet is not faulty, the tv is causing a glare and the lines are formed by in effect "joining the dots" on the carpet. The best you are going to get is a goodwill gesture, which it sounds like they have already offered.
Have you tried repositioning your tv? I would also suggest posting this on the Techie board, see if they can offer a solution.
  • Sunglasses?
  • A plain rug between the TV and where you sit might be a cheaper option.
  • Here's the picture:
It appears what you are seeing is an optical illusion due to the dots and circles directly perpendicular with your seating position and tv.
I would suggest you try moving your seating position and/or tv so that the dots and circles are not perpendicular (The optical effect doesn't appear to occur on the diagonals)
  • I can see it, I'd put a rug down in that bit in front of the telly though, it looks an expensive carpet so I wouldn't get rid of it already.
We've got this in green (grr it's much cheaper in Cardiff) and when it was first pur down it seemed very liney but we don't notice it any more..

  • I think I can see it, you just need something to break up the lines so a rug would be the obvious choice.
  • I love the carpet!
I would try a rug. Go back to the shop and see if the manufacturer makes a rug in the same range then you will get an exact colour match. It would stop your eyes following the lines/joining dots.
(would not have been noticed in my house - toys would soon break the lines)
  • An optical illusion is the least of your problems with a carpet like that....
  • yes a rug arrived about half an hour a go , that seems to help a little , but i think it will need to be 6ft square to hide it all and then theirs what to do about the other 6 rooms
I suppose the real question is how can a company sell a carpet like this without first making you aware that you may see this effect.
    arghhhhhh!
  • You have this carpet in 6 rooms!!??
  • 6 more rooms - I know !
though 3 of them are hallway, porch and landing the bedrooms are in the same style but cream , it does blend really well apart from maybe a few to many spots and flower effects
looks like it's time to get the credit card out !
anyone want to buy several 4 day old carpets , maybe if i throw them all in a pile the 'Tate modern' may buy them
  • It's hardly the shops fault that you see this particular effect, lots of people wouldn't.
They also cannot help the fact that a load of posters don't like the carpet! I think it looks great!
  • I could not see any illusion, then turned my lap top on it's side. The bigger circles then appear to hovver above the carpet.
