A question about : Moved to cornwall... need to make friends!

My partner and I have moved from worcestershire to Cornwall three weeks ago to be closer to his family and he is Cornish and has always wanted to move back down to Cornwall.
It was a mutual decision for us to move and I'm very happy that we have made the big decision to relocate, and once I'm fully settled i'm sure we can have a fantastic life here.
Only problem is, I'm now unemployed and desperately seeking a new job, and also I have left behind a large group of friends and do not know anybody except for OH's family - who are lovely, but I need to make my OWN friends for my sanity!
So what are some good friend making ideas, I'm 25 years old female. Have joined local gym and went today but it was full of blokes, hoping for some fellow females to keep me company!
I'm just worried i'm going to get lonely and depressed being alone all day until I (hopefully) find work here, have suffered deppression in the past and really would not like to head back there title=Embarrassment

Best answers:

  • Is there any classes at the gym i.e. spinning or keep fit? Or is there a Zumba class locally?
  • Yes, I'm going to start doing classes next week and hopeful that there will be some ladies for me to chat to at these classes.
  • Check out the local library as they often have files of local groups. Do you have a WI locally? A bit diffferent but our local one is mainly younger folk.
  • I've recently joined a gym & classes are full of other ladies and I joined the clandestine cake club, great fun, google it :-)
If you have any weigh to loose (you might if you join the cake club lol), slimming clubs are good.
Lastly parent type groups, if you have any children.
  • Where in Cornwall are you?
  • Join the "meet up" website. Google it. Xxx
  • Haha.. this is weird! Maybe you should be my friend soon?! My OH is seriously considering a job in Cornwall that he is in the running for. His family also live in Cornwall and we currently live in Worcester. Just a couple o' years younger than you! DO DO DO DO!!
  • Well done for being pro-active about this.
I'm in my 18th house, so not knowing anyone has become something of a habit!!
You're doing the right things - join everything, even if you don't think you'll be all that interested. If you meet the same person in two different places, they're a mate!
I would add - develop a regular routine. For example, always go for a coffee at one particular coffee shop at 10.30 on a Thursday, or always walk the dog at 7pm - you'll start to bump into the same people, and if you see them again somewhere else you can say hi and have a chat. Get out and do some gardening, particularly if you have a front garden - people always stop and chat.
I know this isn't 'friendship' as such, but you have to start somewhere!
And don't lose touch with your old friends - my life is littered with old friends that I've lost touch with (17 houses-worth). It's much easier to keep in touch now, with facebook, Skype and so on. And Worcestershire isn't so very far from Cornwall - invite them down for a holiday.
  • Depends on where you are on what can be suggested, Cornwall is a beautiful County but the areas are very very different.
  • Try to see if there is anything in the adult education, an evening class, or day course. Sewing is really hot at the moment.
Instead of gym try a class so regular people go to that time slot.
The issue you might find is you are now at the beginning of the tourist season, so people your age are probably working like crazy to earn all their money as this is the key time for them to earn.
Not sure where abouts in Cornwall you are, but there are Sailing courses they would be good to go to, and then join a sailing club and meet others.
What job are you looking for?
  • Try having a search on google or facebook for local friendship/event groups.
  • I live in Cornwall. I would be happy to meet up if you are near me. I am near Liskeard.
  • She's already joined a local gym, so I'm guessing she's not completely at the back of beyond.
  • If your Nr Bodmin they run a women's running club, There is also women's rugby & netball, TBH there is tons of Outdoor and volunteer groups in Cornwall most towns now sadly have a soup kitchen, resource have a community garden project going, there is a lot of seasonal work also going at the moment, holidays lets and caravan cleaning can be reasonably profitable (for Cornwall anyway) if you have your own transport.
Would help if you say which end of Cornwall you are.
  • loztredders, we're making the big move in 6 weeks and will be in the same boat (except I'm moving for my job ) we're moving around the Truro area, where do you live?
Being a very sociable person I feel I may struggle to begin with so would be nice to meet some people!!
  • I moved to Truro a couple of years ago - and one of my best mates came from this very forum. Happy to do a small group meet if people want? Or indeed, if I can be of help scoping things out ahead of time.
