A question about : To Many Choices

So, I am getting confused by the shear number of options when it comes to S&S Isa's

I am 32, my pension forecast currently looks positive to retire at 57, so I'd like to try and bring that forward by investing in S&S ISA to fund the gap between say 50-57, 50 being the current goal as mortgage would be gone, and child will be grown up.

I set up a S&S ISA in 2007 and just had Ј50 going into it, Nationwide one, which uses L&G, I pretty much just set it up and forgot about it until recently.

I am looking to increase the monthly direct debit to Ј500 a month, but looking at the current value, I think I have achieved only around a 3.8% pa which seems a little low.

The current DD buys:
L&G Mixed Investment 40 - 85% A Fund Acc
L&G UK Select Equity A Fund Acc

Is this performance any good? It feels low? I see whole of market ISA's but I don't think I know enough to switch to one of those, and I'm not sure I would be investing enough to make it worthwhile, and I certainly lack knowledge to be able to select funds.

I need to read up, any advice, where I might find a good source that can help me choose the right option for me?

Best answers:

Keep an eye on the cost of the funds, and on the cost of the platform provider.
  • Thanks, lots of reading on the monevator website, spent hours on it over the weekend.
I've got online access now to my account, actually looking at the performance its closer to 6.7%
I have couple of questions which might sound stupid.
The fund charges, how are they applied? I can't see a charge anywhere in the transaction history, is it taken somehow via the unit prices?
If I was to opt to transfer my ISA, do I need to action it before April. I understand you can only have one ISA but I am wondering if I contribute anything from April will that prevent me from moving elsewhere and continuing contributions.
Using the online tool, it has a factsheet for the funds I am in, but it doesn't show the fee. Any ideas why this might be?
All the sector performances seem to be inline, so I am just concerned I might be paying too much for the funds. It looks like they are changing the fee structure to introduce a platform fee of 0.65% and then on top the fund fee's, plus I think nationwide take a cut.
  • Ok, can ignore a couple of the questions I just gave them a quick call.
Fee's are taken from the fund value before the unit prices are calculated, but you all new that lol.
Fee's are 1.76% and 1.67% for the fund, but will be changing to 0.45% for the fund, 0.65% for the platform and 0.5% for nationwide total 1.6%
  • So am I missing something here?
    Using my current ISA:
    L&G Mixed Investment 40 - 85% A Fund Acc
I am currently paying 1.76% and this will switch to 1.6% when they change the charging system and you add all the fee's up.
If I transfer to Cavendish as the ISA provider, I can buy in the same fund, for 0.25% platform fee, and 0.4% fund management fee.
So I'd improve my ISA value 1% a year just by switching.
  • Or buy one of the L&G multi-index funds direct from L&G which is cheaper still.
