A question about : Making Money

Hello my lovelies

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge regarding the selling of computer software online?

I dont know anything about domain names, hosting, etc.

A real newbie to this and would welcome any useful pointers, please.

Best answers:

  • When you say " Making Money - selling downloads" Most downloads are illegal (although there are some legitimate downloads), although I doubt there are any legitimate uses to sell downloaded software even when you pay for it.
  • sorry i think you misunderstood.
i am referring to software that i have written myself.
  • you've asked quite a lot there, theres a lot involved in doing what you ask properly...
but the simplest way it could go would be:
set up a domain name with someone like www.nameroute.com who will give you 10mb of storage free. use a template website from somewhere like www.freelayouts.com then use an ftp (puts the site online) such as filezilla.
on your site you would ave a buy it now button linked up with your paypal account where they would pay. you recieve the payment and send the product to their paypal email address.
anything more automated...i.e is more complicated or costs more of your profit. see: www.payloadz.com and www.shareit.com/
  • Okay thanks for clearing that up.
Probably best also asking in hardware forums too with link to this post to save duplication

  • many thanks griogair, that i think is exactly the information i needed to know.
that has given me a plenty to look into and think about.
    many thanks again
  • Had you considered using clickbank?
    https://www.clickbank.com/index.html
Basically they have a huge number of affiliates who promote/sell your product in return for a small percentage.
Depending on the product this could be the best way to go as it involves the minimum fuss for you and gets you a lot of exposure.
  • this is great stuff, guys......will check these out.

  • I'll echo what's been said about Spanglefish - we upgraded to Gold (ad free, or you can sell your own ad space for Ј25 pa), and the support we've had getting started is unbelievable from Spanglefish and the forums. We too needed a web presence for business purposes and I'm chuffed to bits (OH is a fork truck trainer).
Well worth looking at, they've saved us a fortune in web design costs, etc.
    Good luck with your venture!

  • Thre are other options, my webhost costs 29.99 a year and they have 24/7 tech support, as part of the package you get a "cpanel" contol panel and from there you can use an online application called fantastico to install FREE shopping cart software that supports digital downloads, here is one I've set up for free for a local shop near me, please bear in mind the following!
THE ITEMS IN THIS SHOP ARE NOT LIVE, ITS A TEST SHOP.
in fact I'll just PM you the link so people dont accidentally buy 32,000 pairs of boxer shorts
Basically if you can write software thn I feel pretty sure you can set an online shop up
and the total cost ......... Ј29.99 for the hosting and domain name

  • Depends alot on what the software is. If it's very good and/or unique you may have some success.
Otherwise, my guess is your income will be limited. There's alot of software out there, including decent free apps. Generally, people don't like paying for software, even if it is good. You need to convince them otherwise, which I think will be a challenge.
  • How big is the download?

  • Getting a site up and working shouldn't be too difficult and I'd agree with webguy Fantastico would be a straightforward way to go.
The one thing you need to consider is 'monthly bandwidth', if your site creates a lot of traffic or you provide considerable downloads (either a few large files or lots of small ones) you will need to make sure your monthly allowance is enough or things could get expensive.
Free or low cost hosts won't be suitable for high bandwidth use, so you need to work out a rough monthly figure. (estimated sales x size of download perhaps?)
  • I agree with Griogair, www.Payloadz.com is excellent. Its a fully automated solution that integrates with Paypal and ebay if you want. They host your software and generate a unique download link as soon as payment is recieved.
  • i can code html, php, css java brilliantly and have started learning c#
is there a market for people to send me a program they want written, i write the program then they pay me etc
