A question about : looking for new phone and ipad?

hello, my wife is about to change her phone, the current one, although supposedly smart, doesn't appear to have much memory making sending photo's or using social media painful.
We are also looking to replace our current tablet with an ipad.
Is it worth taking advantage of the current free gift deals with certain providers? yes she'll be paying more, but it would just be like spreading the cost of the ipad over 2 years?
Or are we being dim?

Best answers:

  • Typically, 'free gift' offers are of very poor value.
Usually you can do better by taking a phone only contract, possibly with cashback, and buying the 'gift' you want elsewhere.
Ultimately, even a sim-only contract (or PAYG) with phone bough outright can be cheaper than a contract with a phone.
  • Understood, but not really got the spare Ј300 for a tablet? she could easily get everything she wants in a phone for less that Ј15 p/m but we'd end up buying the tablet on a credit card, not sure that's ideal either.
  • If you don't have 'spare 300' saved, then is it possible that you simply can't afford a Ј300 tablet? Or even a Ј15 p.m. contract phone? I don't think that 'painful' sending of a photo can be explained by luck of memory, but it can be either cleared from rubbish or, possibly, expanded by adding/changing a SD card.
    Just a thought...
Also, credit cards with 0% on purchases aren't uncommon, but this doesn't dismiss the question of affordability.
  • It's not a 'free gift'. You are basically buying the device on very expensive extended 24m credit, so either save up or buy on an interest free or low-interest rate credit card. Work out the total cost over the minimum term. That's what matters, not the monthly sum.
With the phone sorted out as above, switch to a SIM-only contract for around a tenner and put the savings towards the iPad.
  • Does it need to be an iPad, out of interest?
For example if you do your weekly shop at Tesco you can 'boost' your Clubcard points into vouchers and redeem them towards the Hudl2.
  • also some Tesco outlets are giving a Hudl away free if you sign up to a Tesco mobile Ј15 contract. The Hudl is a great tablet for only Ј120 !
  • Thanks for your input. I shall pass on your thoughts.
