A question about : Lonely Cat

Hi
I had two cats but one of them has gone missing (think he was stolen as he was a very pretty cat). My now single cat is very lonely. He is only three years old and still lively and wants to play, so I want to buy anther cat to keep him company.

I originally thought to get a cat of a similar age but it seems quite hard to get hold of a cat that likes/gets on with other cats whereas if I got a kitten would be used to playing with its littermates.

I am now a bit confused, and was hoping some might have some advice, or have had a similar situation?

Best answers:

  • Get an older kitten of about four to six months. It will still be young and playful but it won't be a territory threat to the established cat, it will also be robust enough to cope with a bit of rough and tumble while a small kitten will need a lot of supervision. Also older kittens are easier to get tbh, they're past the ball of fluff stage and not so cute as to be impulse buys. I've never had a problem with settling in younger teenage cats to my established cat household. Also if you get one from the rescue it will probably already be neutered, definately wormed and have all the health checks. Plenty of "Christmas returns" around this time, alas!
  • Please don't buy a cat - there are so many waiting in rescues.
  • sorry to learn about your cat going missing, you must be devastated, can I ask, was the two cats related?
  • On the Cats Protection website, it usually says if they get along with other cats (in fact, it's a search feature now). I'd def get a rescue cat too.
Good luck. Sorry to hear about your cat going missing. That's awful.

  • Yes, I desperately wish I could find my cat. I had him and my other cat since they were kittens, they are cousins from the same place.
I intended to get a rescue cat but I am not doing very well with this plan, I found a 2 year old cat that did well with other cats, (it said so on the website and I was upfront when I asked) but after agreeing to take the cat the rescue people then said actually no it did not do well with other cats.
You can search for 'does well with other cats' but apparently hardly any of them do.
Also most of the rescues want 'secure outside area' which I do not have, so I think I fail on that score too. And I work fulltime which is another bad thing.
tbh the whole thing is reminding me why my cats did not come from a rescue in the first place.
  • Don't give up on the idea of a rescue cat, go to the catchat site and look for a rescue in your area. Have you put missing posters up for your lost cat? Have you asked everyone around you if they have seen it? Do not buy a cat from anyone, there will be a rescue cat if you look hard enough.

  • you my find looking at smaller rescues it worthwhile - also if you are willing to rehome an older cat rather than a kitten the fact that you work full time is less likely to be an issue.
    Ask your vet.
Sorry to hear about your cat going missing -was he microchipped?
  • Working full time shouldn't be an issue for rescuing a cat. I work full time and the rescue places weren't concerned about that - they just wanted a good home for the cats. Also, they felt that as I was adopting two cats, they'd keep each other company whilst I was at work. As it happens, my cats just spend their days sleeping on the beds which they always have done, and only getting up when I get home.
  • how sad the same thing happened to us - we had a mancoon -beautiful enormous ginger moggie who was stolen!! several other pedigrees went the same day! but our tabbi cat was pleased!!!
good luck with finding an older kitten - around Easter there are usually lots as this is the time they start to breed more.
