A question about : Leftover currency coins

I have leftover currency from several different countries.

The notes I was able to change back to pounds, however they told me they did not change coins and I have a lot of coins left.

Does anyone know if it is possible to change coins?

Best answers:

  • You're unlikely to find any foreign exchange places that will take them.
I used https://www.cash4coins.co.uk/ about two years ago and was pleasantly surprised with how much I got. Obviously didn't get face value for them, but as you can't really exchange coins anywhere, anything's a bonus. I had over 5 kg so got free postage, but if you have less, the cost of postage may not make it worthwhile.
Also bear in mind some coins do stop being legal tender - Italy abruptly cancelled the exchange of lira a while back, so if you don't expect to go back somewhere it may be better to get rid sooner rather than later. Alternatively some charities take them and airports normally have a charity collection bin for UNICEF or something too.
  • Donate them to your local charity shop.
  • No exchange desks will take anything small than a 1 euro coin, and no coins for any other currency, the reason being that only denominations that can be resold (to profit turnover and cut out the cost of using dealers) will be purchased. Its always best to make sure you spend all coins, and most airlines will take the coins of the country you are coming from to purchase food.
