A question about : Leave Virgin.... and they take their email address back!

Bit of a rant really....

I have and old .ntlworld email address that ive used for the last 10+ years, in that time ive been with virgin/sky/bt/back to virgin.

Just given Virgin notice that im leaving them and they told me that within 30 days this email address would stop working? Seems a bit strange with a historical email address that ive had from before they even ran my services, but she was insistent that I was going to lose it. Kind of felt like a title=Tongue that will teach you to leave us

Bit of a hassle as its used for FB/Ebay/Paypal etc...

Oh well, im sure that will more than persuade me to return in a years time. title=ROTFL

Best answers:

  • Mine was the same but went is less than thirty days.
But was not an issue for me as I had several non ISP e-mail addresses which I have had for over twenty years.
  • Of course they will, what did you expect? Its part of what you pay for and if you are no longer paying why would they continue to give you it for free?
  • Someone has to pay to maintain these things ...
Why on earth would they offer it for free to someone who is not even a customer ?
  • This is why you should never use an email addrees run by an ISP. it makes me shudder when I see businesses using ISP domain email addresses and have it on their business cards and vehicles. More importantly, ISP email servers are notoriously unreliable and suffer much more downtime than a cloud based email service.
  • I had the same thing when I left Virgin. I had an old Blueyonder e-mail that I lost. To be fair to them it kept on working for about six months so that gave me time to migrate all my accounts to a new e-mail.
  • NEVER EVER use the ISP email address.
With people swapping all the time, there's no point. I don't even use it as a point of contact for the account as I never log on to it.
  • GMail is the way to go.
  • I can understand them retiring the email address even though you have had it for the last 10 odd years. I have had the hotmail and the gmail accounts but for the last 8 years I have my own domain name and email adresses. Not that expensive really - about Ј3 for the domain and Ј10 for the email (yearly)
  • It's a very shortsighted policy by Virgin Media. I had a Virgin.net email address until I left them and they took it off me. And within a few weeks, I'd forgotten all about Virgin. I'd even forgotten they offered broadband when I was looking for a quote for a friend.
  • I lost my Virgin email address when I left them, I had two email addresses, and Virgin was the one I gave to people who might spam it or send it on.
TBH I don't miss it and when my mobile contract runs out (I am counting the days) I will be off.
