A question about : Last minute problem with the holiday dates !! Help

Hi,
I have booked a Europe (Hungary-Turkey -Romania )trip with my partner - travelling on 25th February and returning march 5 .

My partner was intending to apply for a job at his current workplace for a higher post. It was said that the job application will be advertised in the second week of March. But the job application came out last week( which he applied for). The recruitment services are suggesting that the interview date is most likely to be on march 5th.

Thats the day we were supposed to be back from holiday !!
The flights & hotels booked for, will not refund the costs ...
I have taken a travel insurance (annual Europe silver cover from just travel) with a start date of 20th February ..

What would be the best thing to do now ... Will the travel insurance refund cost if we cancelled for a job interview??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Best answers:

  • Insurance won't cover it.
I'd expect any decent employer to show reasonable flexibility to accommodate a half decent application.
  • if you suspect the interview will be 5th march, call the recruiters and ask them to reschedule as you are not available for interview on that date, due to being out of the country.
  • Or try to move your homebound flight by a day or two.
Insurance won't pay a penny if you do decide to cancel, a job interview isn't something you can claim for.
  • Thanks for the replies.. much appreciated.
I am not sure if they could reschedule but will give a try that route.
It's the interview for medical consultant position to the respiratory dept. with 4 posts to fill in an nhs health board. The interview panel is 12 member panel with the current consultant, deanery and hospital head of management.
It might be difficult to reschedule the interview I think.
I was hoping that the travel insurance will cover ..
  • I suspect you're right, the chances of getting those 12 people together again are likely to be slim (unless they're all called up for jury duty at the same time!). I have found employers to be pretty inflexible for interviews I've had in the last few years, they have a day for it and if you can't come on that day, well clearly you don't want the job badly enough.
  • Looks like a lot of money lost... :
    Sad...
Was really looking forward to this trip. It is a long time since we been on a holiday..
    What timing !!!
Any other suggestions, would love to hear from you money saving experts..
  • Presuming that you can get no money back, have you looked into the cost of additional flights one-way to bring you home a day early? Is that feasible?
  • I know this sounds daft but is he guaranteed an interview? If he isn't then isn't this a bit presumptious?
Also what about him getting a flight back the day before?
  • I echo what the other posters are saying. Curtail the holiday rather than cancel. Are you (or can you) return to a popular UK airport? Could you even fly home from turkey? Better than losing the whole trip surely.
  • Oh, hope he gets the job by the way
  • Thank you all so much for the replies..
Curtailing sounds better option.. Will look into it..Will see how that will work out cost wise..
Hope we can get a confirmation on the interview date by Thursday..
    Lesley74... Thank you soo much...
  • Just put him home a day or two earlier.
No need to lose out on the holiday
  • Several points...
Firstly, it is far from sure that the interviews will actually be held on the day planned. I have often applied for jobs (university type) where an interview date is stated, and then been invited for interview on a different day. No-one knows exactly when all those busy people will turn out to be available.
Secondly, the obvious solution is to get a cheap one-way flight home the day before the interview, once you know definitely when it will be held and that he is on the short-list.
Thirdly, on insurance, and I post this in case it is relevant to anyone else reading... If you get an Annual policy then make it commence on the day that you take it out, rather than the day your holiday begins. The reason is that the cancellation cover is only valid from the date the insurance begins, and of course any number of things might happen before your departure date that might force you to cancel. However, if you take single-trip insurance then you insure from your departure date, and you get cancellation insurance from the date you take it out up to your departure date included as part of the deal. And as others have pointed out, this is not the kind of thing that any insurance policy would cover.
