A question about : Job title change

I have been moved into another department at work and there is talk of changing my job title. Can they change this or can I ask for it not to be changed. Normally changing titles to me means redundancies further down the line so they can get shot of you.

Best answers:

  • If you are doing the same job and getting the same age I can see no reason why your job title cannot be changed with or without your go ahead. Check your contract but calling someone a binman or refuse collector still means they are doing the same work for the same money :0)
  • I would say look into it carefully. My last employment wanted to change our titles from business support cordinator to marketing co-ordinator but still the same job role - only the names were to change. However, at the time there were a lot of redundancies being made, and I sought assistance from the union rep. The new name change meant that then there would be lots of "Marketing Co-ordinators" meaning the pool was bigger than before. At the time, redundancies were being made were there were several people with the same job title.
In short you need to weigh up the pros and cons of your particular circumstances.
What are the chances of you being made redundant if the name changes? Greater or smaller than before?
Just for info, our name change did not go ahead in the end. Too much resistance
  • I would have thought the 'role profile' would be more important than the title....from my personal experiene it's what's in this that counts when evaluating etc.
