A question about : Ideas for storage in babies small shared room

Hi,
We are really struggling to sell our 2 bed house, and I'm expecting again in December, my lg is currently in a cotbed in our spare room, but I'm looking for ideas for storage etc so we could fit another cotbed/cot in the room for the 2nd baby plus a wardrobe and another chest of drawers, books etc. I've measured the room and it will just about fit another cotbed in, but I'm worried as to where we are going to put all the clothes, toys, books, nappies etc. Thanks :0)

  • Since small children don't really need hanging space for their clothes, could you temporarily fit chipboard shelving in the wardrobe, then you can use it to store books and toys as well? If you do this remember to fix the wardrobe to the wall with a toggle as they are prone to toppling when they carry a lot of weight high up.
  • A cot would be smaler than a cotbed and no 2 could move into the cotbed when big sister moves out in a couple of years. Have you the drawers that go under many cots that can help a bit. They might have to share a wardrobe and chest of drawers though as it would be a big room that takes 2 of each. We have a Diktad changing table from Ikea which I don't think they make anymore but it has shelves on top of drawers with a change table in the middle. Also shelves on the wall on brackets can go above lower furniture (but not above cots obviously)
  • I'd suggest drawers/ boxes under cot bed for things you might not need contant access to. My baby's nursery is small so when we finally get round to actually decorating it I have bought the 'mulig clothes bar' (Ј4.50) and the 'skubb 6 compartment hanging storage' (Ј8.50). There's no way we could fit a wardrobe in there as well as a cot bed, narrow chest of drawers and a changing table! Have a look at ikeahackers.net for ideas on how to get the most storage out of furniture and also there's a website called apartmenttherapy.com which has a small spaces section which is useful for storage ideas. Wall mounted storage will be your saviour I think... Things like peg wall storage would allow you to hang bags of toys for your lo to have access to as well.
  • Could you move your bed into the spare room, and have the babies in your room with your wardrobe etc? Assuming your room is bigger.
  • I used to have as much as I could taking up as little floor space as possible. I had nappies in a stacker like this hung on the back of the door.

It was made by my MIL. Toys went under the bed. I had a set of drawers which were narrow but tall and I used hallway furniture instead of a wardrobe for hanging clothes.
  • Thanks for the replies, going to have a look at those websites the ikea hackers one looks pretty good for storage ideas :0)
  • You don;t need to be able to fit a cot in the spare room for at least six months - baby should sleep in the same room as you until at least that age to reduce the risk of SIDS. That should help with the space as you only then need clothing storage.
I'm in a similar situation - we're not selling but I'm due in a few weeks and after baby has roomed in with us (we are going to cosleep so don;t have to fit a cot in our room at all) I don;t know where it will go as I run my home business from our spare room! We may need to crack on with our extension plans sooner than anticipated!
  • Yeah I know that it won't be going in another room till at least this time next year, just want to sort storage options out now before I get too big, particularly as I'm working full time and have a 12 mth old to look after too. Hope you get your extension sorted :0)
  • Please post whatever you find as I need some storage solutions too!
  • I really like this idea for when they are slightly older, using the storage boxes as a staircase up to the top bunk, think I'd want to add a rail to the top too https://www.ikeahackers.net/2011/11/l...nto-steps.html
Think I'm going to get some ikea spice racks though as a starter for turning into book racks to put on the wall either side of the window and make a little window reading area for my lg, it's already got a large seat/window cill so just need to make a cushion for it.
Also think I need to look at the possibility of getting the boiler moved downstairs into the kitchen as it's currently in a massive built in cupboard taking up loads of space in the room.
And I think we are probably going to go for a small cot in the room when the bump moves in there to space save, as my lg will be 2 by then so should just be in the bed bit of her cotbed.
Just need to figure out how to incorporate some extra drawers and a small hanging rail in some form or another for dresses etc for her :0)
  • I desperately need a wardrobe with lots of drawers underneath, and not as mugh hanging height, so I can put both children's clothes in my daughter's room; if you come across anything like that please let me know!
  • In our small nursery I've recently bought a cot tidy, which hangs on the outside of the cot and has big pockets for things like small toys, nappies, wipes, socks, muslins, etc. Similar is something that hangs on the back of the door from Ikea (PYSSLINGAR) with three pockets and it was only a few pounds. We've bought some shelves and an under cot drawer. Plus I've put Ikea drawer separators and boxes on top of and in the bottom of the wardrobe to store additional items.
Ikea is great for storage ideas and has things that fit to the walls or hang down the corner of the room to use more of the vertical space when floor space is full.
  • Have u considered bunk cots - yep they exist
  • Have a browse on childrensbedshop.co.uk They have some ideal beds- I have two children who share the same room. I picked bed with storage space for toys and clothes they aren't wearing right now. Cheap prices with them too, made up
  • We all slept in one room (5 at one stage) and used the other as storage. The elder ones soon got used to dropping back off when the baby kicked off & it was nice to hear the various snores.
We had a downstairs cot which made daytime naps easier to manage. Often the bigger two would "sleep in a heap" which was warm, sociable & very easy to keep tabs on.
All the very best with planned move & December arrival!
