How much is temp car insurance in France?

A question about : How much is temp car insurance in France?

I'm going to go to France for a holiday in May for a week and want to hire a car to use during that time. I don't currently have any car insurance. Reading up on it I found this: If you arrive in France with a vehicle without valid insurance, you can buy a temporary policy valid for 8, 15 or 30 days from the vehicle insurance department of the French customs office at your point of entry.
Does anyone know how much an 8 day temporary policy will cost me? Or do I have any other advance options for securing insurance? Thank you

• Whoever you are hiring the car from will arrange basic insurance, you don't need to arrange it yourself.
  If you are looking to hire a car in the UK to drive to France make sure you hire from a company which allows that to happen, many don't allow it, and those that do will charge you handsomely for the privilege.
• Thanks DTDfanBoy. I'm not planning to hire a car here - I'm flying to south of France so want to hire a car from the airport. I've looked at a few rental companies but haven't seen any options to add insurance - guess I could phone some tomorrow
• Are some hire companies including it, is anything excluded and what's the excess?
• What websites are you looking at, as far as I'm aware cars can't be rented out without insurance being included within the EU.
  You'll often be able to upgrade the level of insurance included, but you're normally better off purchasing excess insurance through a third party.
  I've travelled a lot and I've never come across a hire car that doesn't come with basic insurance included.
• All of the major car hire firms include insurance - Hertz, Budget, Avis, etc. The problem is that the excess (the part that you have to pay in the event of a claim, even a no-fault claim) is usually set very high. You can either accept this risk, pay the car hire company a lot of extra money (the actual price they probably won't tell until you pick up the car) to remove the excess, or get a separate "excess cover" policy before you go. Maybe some local firms offer car hire without insurance, especially if it's long term hire, but the places that operate out of airports will be geared to the needs of the tourist, so will include it.
  The only place I've hired a car from an airport with the option of not including insurance is Brazil. Even then the default option was to include basic insurance.
• Ok, my bad then. I just assumed insurance wasn't included since I have always driven my own car abroad previously. I just went to rent a car from SIXT and it shows that 3rd party insurance is included. Will that be enough then or can I, and should I, get fully comp? Thank you

• The main problem with hires is the large excess and complicated terms, inc. in this case the multiplicity of Excess covers offered and high cost. I suggest you look at WorldWideInsure.com which offers low rates per day ($US3 or so) apparently covering every event. Good info. there too.
  I need CDW /Excess cover for a NZ M/home hire which is much more difficult - WWI specifically excludes Motorhomes from their overseas Van Hire CDW.
  The only one I've found (& I've mislaid the site details!) asks for some 10 times the daily rate for a Car than to cover a Motorhome, which is some 60% of the Hirers more restricted CDW cover, ie. still very expensive compared with Car CDW bought here. Anyone found better CDW for M/home hire in NZ?
