A question about : How can I find someone on the Electoral Roll for free?

Hi all,
I am trying to find someone. I can find them, their wife and daughter on the electoral roll using https://www.b4usearch.com/ but they say We are currently updating the Electoral Roll to the 2006/2007 version. so I can't view full details. Does anyone know of where I can search the electoral roll for free... I have tried the obvious bt.com.
Thank you!!!!

Best answers:

  • try 192.com, if they are not ex-directory, you can see the address,if not you have to pay, and its quite dear!!
  • Thanks, have just tried 192.com but think they must be ex-directory...
  • sometimes you get lucky on there, but a lot to pay to find out, don't know of anyother site. unless you live in same town, you can go to main library, they should have last years rolls in books there, but if you dont know address, a big trawl through books!!
  • You have a PM bf.
  • Hi
I need to search the electoral roll for free too?
    Any ideas please message me.
    Thanks
  • Like the OP, I am trying to find someone and would be grateful for a pointer to somewhere other than these sites that try and get you to part with your cash.
The area I wish to check is Wrexham.
    Many thanks in advance.
  • Go to or phone the main local library in your area. They should hold paper copies of the electoral role and will search it or allow you to search it yourself.
If you know the area they live in you can try to phone that main library and ask, we used to get a lot of requests for role checks over the phone.
  • Has anyone used 192.com? It's quite expensive (about Ј2 per search), but that's a price I'm willing to pay.
  • first post,so be gentle,
how long do councils hold electoral records for,
i.e: if i wanted to find out where someone was living in 1996 for instance and new the area they was living in,could i find out from the local council.
    thanks in advance.
  • You nip down to your council and ask...it's a public record.
  • The full register cannot be used at all for searching for people on line. It can only be inspected by going to your local library, council offices or the British Library in London. All these sites have the current register published on 1st December 2009.
The edited register is available to be purchased for any commercial purpose and all these named sites have purchased it to provide search facilities.
My experience of being closely involved with the electoral register is that not everyone places themselves on the full register for various reasons, and only 60% of those on the full register allow themselves to be placed on the edited register.
Legislation is currently being prepared to abolish the edited register and prevnt it from being sold for commercial purposes.
  • Does anybody know the best way to find all my information to build a family tree without paying. ? loads of sites start off saying 'free' when you then start immediatly block you until you agree to pay. I am looking for all ancestors births marriages and deaths, I have paid for several certificates, but need a lot more info. anyone help ?
  • Lots of local libraries subscribe to the Library edition of this. It means you can search for births, marriages, deaths, census returns etc. for free but you'll have to use the library computers to do it - they don't allow free access from home. Ancestry have a free 2 week trial period, but you'd have to pay after that. Also try GenesReunited for a free family tree chart - but you'd have to pay if you want to contact other family history researchers or access databases via them.
