A question about : Home cintenets payout reduction

After a recent burglary, my home insurance provider has agreed to pay out. However, some of the tools offered are different specs and quality. Can I insist they provide me with like for like? Also, for a number of items, they have offered a cash settlement. We have an excess of Ј250 which they say we must send before they release the items. We suggested they take the Ј250 from the cash settlement. They say to do this, they will offer us a reduced price for the cash settlement, meaning they will offer us less. Then deduct the Ј250 excess. Surely this cant be right.... they cant offer us 2 different amounts depending on how we pay the excess

OOps, sorry about spelling in title, don't know how to change it..... stupid fingers....lol

Best answers:

  • Ultimately how the claim should be settled is defined by the terms of your policy. New for old does not normally get defined as an identical replacement but a more general "same specification". The way to argue them is that their suggested replacements arent of the same specification but do it on measurable things rather than subjective things like "quality".
  • They can reduce the cash amount because they get special discounts on the tools that they are allowed to take into account. It's rubbish but there it is.
Best to argue over the replacements to see if you can get some better stuff. As InsideInsurance says quality is subjective so expect the cheapest crap that has the same spec (on paper) as the originals, and take anything better as a bonus.
