A question about : Hoarding Pre-Baby

Hey ladies, apologies if this has been done I haven't been on for a while.

So I am hoarding things before baby three arrives, the usual baby wipes, shampoo, nappies etc. And I'm planning to breastfeed so I have a pump and I'm looking into buggies for expressed milk etc.

I was wondering firstly if it's worth hoarding household things like toothpaste, washing up liquid etc. Or is it better to just buy as you go along? Also what sorts of things you'd suggest hoarding other than the usual baby stuff listed above.

Have a great day ladies title=Smile (and gents) xx

Best answers:

  • Is their much point to hoarding? I may buy 3-4 ketchups when they are on offer but you can be sure 3-4 weeks later another offer is running ~ wipes are on offer constantly so not much point their...?
    Or am I missing something
  • I was thinking more along the lines of if I buy it now using money I have available, I don't have to pay it out when my money reduces while on mat leave? X
  • But if you don't buy it now you will have more money when you are on maternity to buy it then, so it doesn't make any difference financially.
  • iv just had my first baby and before she came I did a bit of 'hoarding' on things such as washing liquid, toothpaste, and toilet roll, buying it when it was on special offers. mainly because those things are pretty essential and I didn't want to run out in the early days in case I was rushed off my feet! nobody wants to run out of toilet roll
  • I would hold off - with nappies and wipes, you can never be sure what type will suit your baby, so if you bulk buy one particular brand, you may be stuck with nappies that leak, or irritate your baby. Also, babies don't really need shampoo/baby bath etc when they're little so that's also a bit of a waste.
I'd save the money instead, then bulk buy in one of the many baby events that every supermarket has, once baby is here and you know what suits.
  • I am a top hoarder! My loft is practically insulated with toilet rolls from the tesco offer when you got cheap petrol!
Just discovered I am expecting baby number 2 so I will be hoarding! Not so much wipes and nappies as everyone else has said they will be on offer over the next months but I like to pick up odds and ends especially after baby events when things are reduced even more and I always have big stock of fabric detergent and conditioner etc!
  • I'd save the cash and use it when you need it, different nappies suit different babies, some are whoppers so are barely in size 1 or 2 for any time, some have sensitive skin and need a certain brand of wipes.
We used water to bathe our little one, no soaps or anything and even now a bottle of shampoo lasts us at least half a year, so no point for us to stock pile things like that.
  • We had our baby in February and didn't get organised to do a proper shop for about three weeks... So having a well stocked freezer, variety of lunches and tin of biscuits for visitors was good! Our parents bought on fresh goods (fruit, milk etc) to keep us going. I'd recommend bulk buying any toiletries you'd rather not ask someone else to pick up eg breast pads, maternity pads etc. I got through more than I expected in the first weeks and couldn't get out to the shops for more due to my recovery.
I often bulk buy stuff I know I'll use for sure, but as others have said you may need to try a few brands/ sizes of baby stuff before you find what you like.
    Good luck!
  • I hoard washing powder/fabric conditioner/baby shampoo/kitchen roll/washing up liquid etc. I wait until they're on offer and stock up (why spend more than you have to!). I did this when I was expecting my son...I was always washing clothes..washing up and sterlising bottles and you can't always get out/or want to go out so it was really useful. Good luck to you I hope it all goes well for you xx
  • Hoard:
Canned basics - baked beans, chopped tomatoes, tinned spuds (if you like them) - any tin you use regularly to cook.
Speed ingredients - spaghetti keeps admirably in the right container & cooks up in minutes (I'm a fan!) & multipacks of noodles also handy
Depending where you shop you can buy containers of rice - 7kg a time. (I then decant to a tub I can use more handily, but saves me a packet on rice & less worries about end of month feeding.)
Within reason cleaning chemicals, toothpaste, deodorant, & loo roll - storage is going to be the issue as well as upfront affordability, but if you see your favourite brand on special, stock up!
If you can afford it, get a bigger freezer & load it. Both with raw materials & batch cooked heat-and-eats.
In fact, if you have the cash & a pal with an estate car & a Costco card, go through your cupboards & draw up a detailed list of what you currently have & how much of it.
Then draw up a second list of what you'd like to have more of.
Shop *ruthlessly* to that list at Costco, after you've looped through at least 2 supermarkets seeing what they have on special offer! (It'll be tiring & expensive - plan the finances first as well as breaks to rest!)
Do not hoard clothes. Look at the size difference between newborn & one year old. More than 6 of any garment is probably wildly redundant unless & until there's a vomiting bug or your washing machine packs in. Anyway an outfit of sorts is a default present - store all gifts carefully so you can try to exchange them if they don't immediately appeal.
Also I wouldn't hoard washing powder in case your baby's skin doesn't like what you have stashed.
    All the very best!
  • I would hold off and see how you go.
  • I'd hoard home made frozen meals - spag bol etc. Just defrost and nuke.
When I was expeting twins I bought practically half a cow's worth of yellow stickered mince and made it all into savoury mince mix. When they were born, I'd take a pack out the freezer in the morning to defrost, add necessary extras like kidney beans or tinned toms and I would do the carb bit and frozen veg whilst OH put the boys to bed. He had some quality time with them and we had a decent meal.
Yellow stickered stuff all the way.
