A question about : highest counter offer yet

Yesterday evening I found an item I quite liked at at Ј12 BIN or Best offer. I put in an offer at Ј11 on the basis it was worth a try and expecting back a counter offer of about Ј11.50. This morning I have my counter offer - Ј11.99

Hardly seems worth the effort really.

Best answers:

  • Few weeks ago I had a collectible figure up for Ј34.99 with Make an Offer
Received offer of Ј18.00, I countered with Ј22.00 which I thought was fair as I was happy to sell.
He countered my offer with Ј17.99! 1p less than his original offer, so I declined.
He then made one last offer at Ј22, I accepted, next morning I get a message saying 'I bought this from someone else and want to cancel'... yay best offers!
  • I would occasionally (before I'd set auto reject) get offers of Ј10 on something listed at Ј100 so would counter Ј99.99. A couple of times I got sensible counters back.
It's interesting the range of people on best offers. Some sellers will accept crazy low prices and others just have it switched on to boost them in searches (mobile apps have a search for best offers only).
One regular supply I was buying had best offer and was set to auto accept at Ј11.75 from Ј12, everything below that was auto reject. It seemed pointless but it was a fast selling item.
  • I needed 3 widgets this weekend, there they are on eBay at Ј19.99 each or Best offer. I offer Ј17.50 each to start with and it's refused, fair enough. Sellers counter offer?
    Ј19.98p.
For three of these he's offering me a whacking 3p discount. Needless to say id rather pay a little more from any other seller now so he's lost Ј60 of my business and possibly more than that as it's something recommended to others through a club im in.
Seriously though, why offer best offer as an option if you are going to do that? You just annoy your potential buyers.
  • I usually accept, reject or counter-offer manually, because various factors can influence my decision (e.g. buyer's previous feedback for sellers, my financial situation at the time, whether the item is seasonal, etc). I've occasionally had customers phone me to negotiate a price for multiple items.
  • I placed a best offer bid, wasn't silly low, and seller counter offered dropping 50p which was a trivial amount compared to the cost of the item. Got my back up so ignored it and went elsewhere.
  • I don't see the point to the best offer feature.
If there's an item I want with it I used to make an offer. Not a stupid offer. No more than 5-10% less than the BIN price depending on the item. Usually the seller would ignore it so I'm basically left hanging for 48 hours. Can't buy elsewhere in case they accept.
Last week I offered Ј12 on a Ј13 item. Seller ignored it. And I know they were on as they listed other items during the 48 hours. Why not just decline or counter offer?
So I bought from another buyer because I think if a seller can't be bothered to decline or counter offer I can't be bothered giving them my money.
So I'll buy elsewhere and pay a bit more.
