Best answers:

  • I would imagine the train is your only option. You do realise there is nothing much in Whitehaven dont you?
  • checkout thetrainline.com - they have some limited availability cheap single journey tickets so buy in advance - two singles rather than a return - and they are specific to certain train journeys - not anytime but if you plan it right you could get there and back for under Ј30. Be careful you consider the number of train changes on the journeys though and overall time - can vary from 1 to 3 changes and just under 3 hours to nearer 4
  • Never use the trainline as they charge booking fees. Find the tickets on there but book directly with the train company as they have the same tickets.
  • 8.52am from Bolton, 1 change at Lancaster, arrive Whaven 12.47pm
6,52am from Bolton,1change at Barrow in Furness, arrive Whaven 10.26am
Return next day 16.36pm,1 change at Preston, arrive Bolton 20.34pm
Other times have 2 or 3 changes
  • I was referring to Whitehaven. If by the visitors centre you mean the Beacon then theres not much going on there and it wouldnt pass much time. The town is dire with stores closing down. St Bees is not in Whitehaven, there isnt much coastline in Whitehaven other than the harbour and what you call the lakes isnt Whitehaven either.
  • Use the National rail website to research, there is plenty of choice with one change.
Two advance singles standard from Ј20.20, first class from Ј37.00
  • Im local but never admired Whitehaven.
  • Thanks so much for all your help! it's very much appreciated! and Carol i used to live there many years ago! I love Whitehaven! I lived at Moresby Parks!
  • I went to St bees and went to the priory and the St bees man exhibition. I then went to the beacon at Whitehaven who have a video of the autopsy on the St Bees man, it was fascinating watching this autopsy on the body of a 600yr old man - you could actually see the blood in his lung which reputedly killed him, when they took his liver out it was bright pink and turned black and disintegrated in his hand (due to being subjected to the air). If you are not squeamish then it makes fascinating viewing and rounds of the detail of his find during an archaeological dig at the priory - they reckon they even know who he is now. However it does pass a few hours in St Bees and Whitehaven - The Beacon do like you to phone 1st in order to arrange a viewing of the video - it did not cost anything I basically sat in a store room and watched it on an old TV. The video was taken on an old hand held video camera and was not the best of quality but still well worth it if this is your kind of thing.
I must admit I was not overly impressed with Whitehaven, there were some lovely Georgian buildings but the overall impression was that they should have closed the town down for a few days and gave the whole place and good cleaning and a lick of paint.
