A question about : Help! Tesco coupon policy? I've been banned!

Help!

Can someone please please help me!?

I often use coupons with no problems at all. Over the years I have always gone to checkouts where people serve you. I know this might sound like a strange statement but over the last month or two, I've been going to the self-service checkouts. Again, Ive been using coupons with no problems.
Sometimes I would buy Ј10 of goods and use Ј9 of coupons! No-one said anything!

About three weeks ago, while using a self-service checkout, I was approached by a customer service manager who told me that if I wasnt actually buying the product, I could use only one coupon. One coupon in total and not one per manufacturer. I told her I did not realise this because when you ask checkout people they all seem to say something different!

I came home and emailed Tesco customer service. The reply I got was that if I wasnt buying the product, I could use one coupon PER manufacturer and that internet coupons (which I dont use) were at the discretion of the manager.

After receiving this email, I have been back a few times (same store) but gone through ordinary checkouts (with real people!). Each time I have asked if I can use coupons and each time they have said yes and just scanned away.

TODAY... I was going through the checkout....I asked the girl if I could use coupons...I told her that I had bought some things but mainly I hadnt. She told me that as long as there weren't more than one of the same coupon, it was fine.

She's scanning away and a security man and the cs manager, who spoke to me a few weeks ago, came up to me and told me that I had to go into the office!
They took me in....I was too gobsmacked to say anything! They told me that I was abusing their policy, obtaining goods by deception(!) and that I am banned from ever going there again! This is only the second time I've spoken to a manager! They said that its a private building and if I ever go there again, I would be trespassing and they would phone the police!!!!!!

I thought they were going to arrest me!

They asked for my name (I refused), then they asked for my clubcard( still refused) and then the security man stood up and I really felt intimidated. They would not let me leave until I gave the card!!!!

I feel so humiliated I cannot believe it!

My goods were about Ј26 and my coupons came to probably Ј20. I know its a lot but I did not have any double coupons at all.

I've telephoned customer services who said that they would phone me back but she said something about it being a store issue.

I am an honest person just trying to save some money by following their own coupon policy to the letter of the email I received.

HELP!

  • I just cant stop laughing the rest of you be ware
  • Gosh, this is awful. You must be devastated being made to feel like a criminal just for doing something that their Head Office sanctions in the first place.
I regularly go into my local Tesco and hand over a wodge of coupons. I just say 'I have some coupons here, can you scan them to see which ones you can take, please?'. Sometimes they take a few, sometimes loads. There doesn't seem to be any consistent policy.
I do hope someone on here can help you or make a suggestion.
    Sending you a big hug.
  • I am sorry
  • i got say why were you using that much in coupons anyway, it a bit too much really getting Ј26 in shopping and using Ј20 in coupons ok if you bought the product thou.
i thought it was only 10% of the shopping, unless you are buying the thing on the coupon.
they should have not done that to you, maybe just said we can only take the coupons that you bought
  • agree completely mickydes, and the tills should be programmed to accept only coupons where the product is bought, or up to a certain amount.
  • What's the betting they apologise and send you some coupons?
  • think there's a thread somewhere - the great 'letters that work' hunt, or something. sure there are links on there to other sites which help you to construct a letter, incl. complaints.
Anyone else remember what i'm talking about? Anyone good at links!!?
  • call your local police station and ask what possible course of action you could take
write a letter to tesco HQ describing everything as you have here - or even go to a no win no fee lawyer
  • i not sure and don't want to be flamed here.
but did they take the tesco card because it remains the property of tesco at all times?
but i would write in send it recorded post as well, so you know they have it.
phone them as well, hope you got the name of the person that dealt with you in that bad way,so tesco can go straight to them to see why you were treated like that.
  • you could also have a look at this site, it helps you to complain, used it a couple of times, very good Good luck https://www.howtocomplain.com - home page
  • I would recommend going to you local newspaper.
Imagine it now...you standing outside your local Tesco store with a glum look on your face and your clubcard in your hand.
Local papers love this kind of story and big organisations hate bad pr.
    Good Luck

  • Hope Walmart wipes them out, even just for Igloo's sake.
They imprisoned you so you should contact the police.
  • Agree with gobbyash and go to the papers, hope you're feeling okay now igloo.
  • Maybe Martin can enquire about the new Tesco policy of imprisoning customers. that may give TESCO HQ an incentive to sort this manager and ape out
  • Sorry to hear of your trouble.
Did the email you have have a name on the bottom. Enclose a copy of the email but not the original. Perhaps even trying to locate this person who emailed you in the 1st place may be an idea. I work in a shop as a supervisor and I believe that you have been treat very unfairly. Id be wanting a face to face apology from this manager at least as well as a lot more. When writing do so by recorded post and to the most high up person you can. Give them a deadline to sort this out to your complete satisfaction else your going to take the matter further. Please do post back with what happens. I know this may sound odd but I so wish it was me. They would so regrette it. That makes me sound awful doesnt it but sice becoming a supervisor ive really noticed just how bad service some stores give.
Im soon to be a Sainsburys employee as my companys been taken over and im so looking forward to learning how another shops works
    Good luck
