A question about : Help With Student Loans

Hey, i have alot of Knowledge of how the student loans procedure works. If anyone needs any help, i can advise as much general info.
Obviously i cant divulge into specifics due to Data Protection and the fact that i'd get fired, but anything i can help with, just let me know.

Best answers:

  • can a postgraduate PhD student get any more money added onto existing student loan? (i already have about 10K from undergrad days)
  • Im afraid not, the only postgraduate that is entitled to support is a PGCE.
I'd advise contacting your Uni or Local Authority.... Details of phone numbers can be found on www.studentfinancedirect.co.uk
  • Hi SLCWorker...
Is there a phone # where I can talk to a "real" slc person? I'm sure when I tried before, I was put off by the idea of being in debt & not actually being able to speak directly with the lending company.
Also, my part time fees are due... can I get a loan?
    Help me asap please, thanks!!!
  • Hi there, iam a real SLC person....but then again i think i understand what u mean.
the phone numbers are 08456 077577 (its a long process to actually get through, i advise pushing all the buttons on the phone til u get thru)
or 0800 405010, but they may divert you. As its a number specifically for scottish students.
Also u can chat online at www.studentfinancedirect.co.uk
    or theres me. x
  • Hi,
Im graduating this year (hopefully if they sort out the strike action) and wondered how much the interest on the loan actually is and whether if I am earning only minimum wage after graduation whether it is financially worth saving the money and paying off my loan asap after graduation (want to get a mortgage with my partner in a couple of years)
    Thanks
  • cool... thanks for the #'s
So, what's the deal with a loan for my part time education?
    Thanks!
  • Well the interest rate changes every september. Its now at 3.2%
As far as a mortgage, they will ask for info on ur student loan, if you have paid some off, it will be beneficial for yourself.
But you'll be able to defer ur repayments as you would earn lower than th Ј15,000 threshold. Its your choice, but you can setup direct debit or make manual payments.
For more info on repayment options etc, you can call us on 08702406298.

  • for part time courses. you can receive upto half of a normal student loan entitlement.
The application is the PTG1 form, again it can be downloaded from our website
  • cheers for that, will they also be able to tell me when the statement of how much i have borrowed are posted out as can then start paying it off asap :-)
  • also is that premium rate number? (i.e should I make the call using my works phone! lol) :-)
  • slc,
im still studying, but is it possible to pay the normal repayment of say X, then pay Y when exta money is avaliable to clear off more of it?
  • The statements are always sent out in september. but if you call up, we can give u the amounts over the phone, or send out a statement. x
  • i am an 'old' student. that is i began in 2003, before the education grant and before top up fees.
i was assessed as being able to get everything, including my tuition fees paid for by the LEA. i got full student loan and full help with tuition but thats it. im under 25 and was assessed under my parents income.
im now a mum and am going back to uni in september, to the same course. my uni think i am a returning student. what excatly am i entitled to? can i get the grant now? do i need to borrow money for my fees or will it all be paid for my LEA again? im unmarried but my partner earns 18k, who do the LEA assess?
  • Hello Again SLC wrker :-)
    !!! HELP !!!
I have tried the #'s & it's the same HORRENDOUS loop to no one!
I really want to speak to someone.
    Thanks again!
  • kittenkirst: yeah its premium rate. x
jersy: yes, you have your minimum repayment amount, but can always pay more on top of that. By card or cheque...x
  • hey, yeah the phone service is useless. The following are the phone numbers
    Repayments ICR : 08702406298
Repayments Mortgage Style (pre 99): 08702422211
    Student Finance Direct: 08456077577
    or Scottish New Students: 0800405010
  • Karnam: as u are starting a new course, it depends entirely on your LEA if you are entitled to support again, but there shouldnt be a problem.
You can receive a non-means tested tuition fee Loan of Ј2700 with Ј300 in grants if ur income is low. with your situation you can also receive numurous grants in regards to childcare.
We have a calculator on www.studentfinancedirect.co.uk and if you input your details it can assess you and give you a good idea of entitlement.
x x x hope thats off some help.
  • but i am on the same course at the same uni surely this means my tuition fees stay the same? ive certainly been told that they will be my uni, but will the LEA pay for them?
  • it depends if its classed as a continuation of your original course, if so then it will be fine and your tuition fees will only be 1200, but will still be a loan. You'd be best to check with your LEA on how they will class your situation.
