A question about : Help me choose Broadband or Mobile Data

Okay, so Midweek I'm living away from home.

I've just rented a flat, which was built in the last 10 years or so.

There be a phone socket in the lounge.

I have no TV and don't watch a lot of TV, so no need for TV licence.

I do use my computer quite a bit, and watch the occasional Catch up (max of about 4 hours a week - 1 hour a night). My internet browsing is more forum and e-mail than film. Rarely I might Skype.

So I've looked at broadband deals via the phone line and yes I could get unlimited plusnet broad band and a phone line for less than Ј18 a month. The cost of installation is less than the cash back, so lets call it Ј18 a month.

Now I also have a mobile which I am happy with that is out of contract, and I have found various unlimited data sim packages for Ј18 to Ј25, which would pretty much give me what I want if I tether it. Right now I am tethering.

It's the T&C's that worry me really.

Giff gaff, have this no tethering policy,

3 have a policy that I think limits tethering to 4 GB

I assume similar with other providers. Anyone have any experience of this / advice ?

I quote the 3 policy below :
Personal Hotspot.

Turn your phone into a personal Wi-Fi hotspot on all of our plans and connect your tablet or other devices. If you've got all-you-can-eat data, this includes 4GB personal hotspot allowance.

Best answers:

  • Have you got any way of working out how much you use? EE do a portable WIFI device or tablets that take sim cards and work on EE. You can then use these to tether but also take the wifi with you wherever you go.
Broadband is likely to be cheaper but will be minimum term contract and will have limited or no portability depending on network. (some offer a limited free wifi outside of home)
