A question about : Help with letter to landlord re rent increase

Hi All,

Had a letter from landlord to increase rent by Ј50 (required notice given) I think that we should write a letter to see if we can pursued him not to. Good tenants, always pay in time and in full, place kept in good condition, no complaints. The reason LL gave us is the market value of the whole building (not our flat), but we asked our neighbours and they did not receive any letter at all. We have a rolling contract and we live there for 1.5 year. Any advice?

Anyway I am struggling to word it, wondered if anyone had written a similar letter that I could pinch the wording from? Many thanks!

  • It depends on what 'notice' you received.
  • Rent will increase on 19th March but if we would like to leave we have to notify a month in advance. The letter was sent on 3rd Feb but we were on A/L and we just came back last Sat 21st Feb. LL knew that we were on A/L.
  • It's a rolling contract, I moved in Nov 2013 (contract minimum 6 months) and in May 2014 my LL asked me if I would like to continue and I said "yes".
It did not say anything about S13 in the letter.
  • Many thanks for all you help in this matter. I have a meeting with my landlord later this evening. I hope we can get an agreement.
    Thanks again!!
  • Before attending this meeting, calculate how much it will cost in fees, how easily you can provide a new deposit/months rent in advance against paying Ј50 extra a month if the LL gives notice.
    Weigh the two up.
Look at rents in the area for similar properties.., is it below market value?
    I wish you luck.
