Dear Sir/Madam,

I request that [INSERT THE NAME OF YOUR BANK] provides me with details of all default charges for unauthorised overdrafts and unpaid direct debits and standing orders I have paid in the last six years.

I understand that [INSERT THE NAME OF YOUR BANK] is obliged to provide this information under the Data Protection Act 1998.

I look forward to hearing from you within 40 days.

Yours faithfully

Well today she has just received the following back:

There is a £5 charge for the information you requested. Should you accept this charge, please forward to us the amount stated and the information you requested will be sent out as soon as possible.

My question to you money savinge xperts....is this right? Do we have to pay the £5 or should they provide this information for free???

Seems again they want more money from us!!

  • Hello - is anyone there?
  • Hi there.
I have been reading through this claiming back unfair charges just this weekend and from what I have been reading, if you do not know all the details of the charges made to your account, you can send your bank a letter requesting the information but have to include a fee to cover Data Protection subject access.
Please see this link to MSE's article
    https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi...1050760,24632,
this gives an outline of the process and links off to the consumer action group which provides templated letters for use and tells you what the process is.
If this link doesn't work. Go to MSE home page and scroll down to the link to 'Reclaim unfair bank charges'.
    Hope this helps.
    Good luck
  • I think that they can claim up to £10 for the information.
Afterall they did send you statements and if you had kept them you could see the charges for yourself!
