A question about : Halfords Trade Card

I've recently managed to get my hands on a Halfords Trade Card. These can get you anything between 0% and 80% discount on Car Parts in any Halfords store.

The problem is that you don't know how much discount it gets you until you take your card and the item to the till and ask them to scan it through. Rather than doing this every time, I thought it would be a good idea to try and start a list of rough prices for various items that people have purchased. This should give us a fair idea of if its worth getting the item from Halfords or your local motor factor.

Any other relevent information may be useful as well - for example the discount on Halfords own brand products is generally greater than that of a 3rd party.

If you're a mechanic or in the trade and can prove it then the Halfords Trade Card could mean sizeable savings. To prove you're eligible you'll need to show either your City and Guilds in Motor Mechanics certificate, or equivalent, or proof that you're employed as a technician.

However, even if you've been working in the trade for some time and can't prove you're qualified, some store managers will, at their discretion, give cards to those who can prove they make a lot of purchases by showing receipts from local motor factors although they'll also prefer that this be accompanied with proof of employment where possible.

• how do you get these cards? ive always been motortrade but out of work at the moment
• You can apply to become a Trade Card member at any Halfords store. Simply ask a member of staff to help you complete your application and bring with you your proof of working in the motor trade - outlined below:

• Well I bought 4 NGK plugs, oil filter and air filter for a 1994 1.1 Fiesta and it came to the grand total of, wait for it £9 odd. Couldn't believe the discount really. Tools and equipment are also discounted. Also body filler, fibreglass etc.
• I've got one of these cards through being a member of an online car club/forum.
  It costs £10 (or £15 can't remember exactly) per year for the club membership which is well worth it when you add up all the savings from Halfords throughout the year.
  My OH has one too, he saved £30 odd when buying a car battery a couple of weeks ago but has saved heaps in the last couple of years.
  OH did a service on my Dads car last summer. For all the stuff, it should have cost around £120, but the trade price was just under £60.
  If there is something you are interested in, you can ring a Halfords store and ask what the trade price is beforehand.
• If you've got the City and Guilds, then yep!!! FOr those without them, shellsuit's suggestion is well worth looking into - you'll save the Ј15 forum membership fee after buying your first set of plugs and filters.

• We didnt have to show any pay slips id ect to get a trade card, My oh works for Lotus and went in after work in his overalls, Manager came up to him and gave him a card, he didnt even ask!
  Its brill, Batteries are half price too, and my car gets a full service for Ј20!

  right an update on my story.
  i went to halfords during the week after work with working togs on and payslip in hand asked about trade card,the spotty teenager tried to look at me suspisiously as if to say why should you get one and after some terrifiying interogation and a long read through my payslip he produced a form for me to fill in and sign,then signed my card and that was that.
  really good discounts on car parts, tools and storage.
• any idea if paint/filler/waxoil etc is discounted?
  do they actualy tell you whats covered and whats not, as i still wont shop there for full price items unless im forced to
  proof of sigiture? so passport or driving license i guess?
