A question about : Growing Ginger

To my shame :-[, ive left a piece of ginger so long that it has sprouted. in the spirit of MSE, does anyone know how i could grow it on even if only as a pot plant?

Best answers:

  • lie it on the soil with the roots downwards and see what happens
    nothing to lose
  • I thought about that , but as a tropical? plant and were coming into autumn i thought better of it. but sticking it in soil in a pot it would prbably rot :-/. i just hate to see something trying to survive that i cant bin it

  • yr welcome di, good luck with it.
  • i always throw sprouting things into pots :
then I have constant pototes....and things - as they don't rot so much in the soil!!!!
  • how do you do, potatoes.
  • sorry don't know where , came from, meany how do you do potatoes in a pot`
  • i use a strawberry planter or the larger pots where I have killed off the previous plants.....
and I chuck them in...put soil on top....and then let them grow....have mainly done the little new potatoes or salad potoatoes or I think it was Anya (a nutty flavoured one) in fact all the pototoes I have that sprout.....
    Hope that helps?

just rang brother in law who is a champion spud grower
says they take about 5-6 weeks in the dark to sprout then in 6 months you should have leaves and such so about 8 months to harvest
  • How do you find all this stuff??
  • at my age you find youve learned a lot and if not my 77year old mum will know or my old mates who are also well read
failing that a google search will always come up trumps
  • just rang brother in law who is a champion spud grower
not an official champion spud grower just grows his own
hes never had a crufts winner or anything though
  • little potatoes are done in a few months....my mum thought I'd killed them, as I waited for the stalks to die down - don't know if you are meant to, but once they had tatties where doing just fine!!!
