A question about : Good locations to stay to explore Lewis and Harris

We're planning a two-week trip to Lewis and Harris next summer (having been bitten by the Outer Hebrides bug on Uist this year!).

We'd ideally like to stay in one cottage for the full two weeks, to avoid having to pack up and move halfway through. It looks like it's around 80 miles and 2.5 hours from 'tip to tip' down the length of Lewis and Harris, so we'd be happy to stay roughly halfway along and explore out from there.

Can anyone recommend any locations (or specific self-catering cottages?). We'll be looking for hiking and hill-walking, wildlife (particularly bird) spotting for the hubby and cycling routes for myself.

Best answers:

  • The tourist information in Stornoway are very good for this sort of thing and there are loads of cottages to rent sadly for the locals.
Remember too no buses etc on a Sunday, 99% of shops closed and no "leisure" activities on the sabbath either Harris is better than Lewis in this respect!
