A question about : Giving Sky 33 days cancellation notice

I've just called Sky asking them to cancel my service in 33 days time. They tried to tell me that I need to call back in 2 days because they can only deal with 31 days notice. I argued that it is not my responsibility to do that because by giving 33 days notice, I was complying with the terms of my contract. They claimed that their system couldn't deal with my request and that I needed to call back in 2 days. Again, I argued that this was their problem not mine and that I had no responsibility to call back 2 days later. The agent put me on hold to talk to a colleague and came back to tell me that it was possible and she then did it.

So, does anybody know what your rights are? I haven't looked at the contract but I assume that by giving 33 days notice, I am contractually giving 31 days notice and that I do not need to give EXACTLY 31 day notice

Best answers:

  • You're right in that you don't need to give exactly 31 days notice, only that you need to give at least 31 days notice.
The issue arises in that it occurs so rarely that someone gives more than 31 days notice that the front line staff at Sky are either not aware that this is the case, or more likely, are unfamiliar with the procedure for processing such a request. It may even be that the line managers or other senior staff are the only ones who can process the request.
There's a few threads on the official Sky forums about this subject and in each one it is stated that yes, you can give more than 31 days notice but the front line staff cannot usually process the request.
  • OK thanks, they did it in the end but I really didn't see it as my responsibility to call back in 2 days time.
I wonder what they would do if you served cancellation notice just after installation for the end of your 12 months?
  • I would suggest you write and confirm your cancellation and keep a copy. Sky claimed they had no record of my telephone cancellation and I was plagued with debt collectors for months afterward.
  • Oh.....
I did get an email confirmation. I'll keep that
