A question about : gas fire not fitted corectly

We had a hole in the wall gas fire fitted incorrectly which made the plaster above the fire crack. We had a independent company to remove and refit the fire and they found that the cavity wall had not been sealed off, precast flew had not been sealed off and a lintel had not been fitted but worse than that they found that the fire was just sitting on four pieces of marble two each side, three inches square and about an inch thick the right hand side of the fire was levelled up on a length of copper pipe and then just plastered in. We also found that he was using three different gas safe numbers. We informed gas safe of this but he is still allowed to install gas fires. Has anybody else come across this ?

Best answers:

  • If you have concerns as to the safety of the installation you do have a right to demand an inspection by Gas Safe on a new installation, but they are a very cost conscious organisation and are not eager to spend money, so you may have to be insistent.
Under the old protocols the installer was offered the opportunity to be present at the inspection. Today all inspections are done without informing the installer. The first they hear is when they get a letter outlining defects and rectification required of them.
They may inspect and find it a bit messy but safe, and as safety is their main concern I'm not sure quite what happens next.
  • You could try contacting the Manufacturer of the fire and asking them for a report of the install. They will charge you for a callout, which could be in excess of Ј100, but they are usually quite hot on things like this, as ( what I have found) they do try to pick holes in installations, in order to get out of warranty work. It is always someone else's fault.
I have heard of incidences where the manufacturer has reported things like this to H&S and Gasafe and had severe repercussions on the installer.
It doesn't sound a good fit at all, nothing should be supported on a piece of gas pipe.
