A question about : Frontline Vs Flevox

Thought I'd lose my dog today after changing her regular flea treatment from Frontline to Flevox.

Bathed and dosed her on Friday afternoon and she went steadily downhill from then till the really low point this lunchtime.

I always thought that Frontline and Flevox were the same thing. 67mg's for her weight of Fipronil in a mostly alcohol solution.

She never reacted to Frontline, other than being a bit mardy to it being applied, so after reading up on Flevox I thought I'd give it a go as it's much cheaper.

Wow, you don't realise how much they matter until you face the very real prospect of losing them do you?

As soon as the symptoms appeared, which didn't have us too worried at first, we put her back into the bath and washed it off. As she gradually deteriorated we found a few websites that point out what Frontline and Flevox fail to . . . just how dangerous Fipronil is. It's even reckoned to be responsible for the deaths of kennel staff !

The vet came out and gave her a steroid injection for a boost but explained other than that . . . there's not a lot she can do and we can only wait and see and let time take its course.

I didn't sleep last night and probably won't tonight, she's well on the way back now but this lunchtime she was alternately fitting and trying desperately to walk in a straight line.

Has anyone else suffered such a reaction from their dogs to any Fipronil based flea treatment?

Best answers:

  • Wow. That's absolutely awful.
I hope your dog makes a quick and full recovery.
I've used both frontline and flevox in the past and thankfully had no issues.
But I last used frontline about 6 weeks back and found a flea on my dog about three weeks later. So switched to advantage and did the house with RIP flea extra.
The intention from now on is to do the house regularly and use Billy no mates replant so as to try and avoid using too many chemicals on the animals themselves.
  • Crikey, glad everything was ok! Sounds like a bad reaction, but odd unless there is something else she is reacting to in the flevox.
It's a pretty toxic chemical alright, but like with most medication, it's sometimes the lesser of two evils. We have to be very careful with ticks round our way so always use it.
Glad all is ok. Just make sure when you next use frontline the vets are open in case of emergency. Maybe test a small mount first in case she has developed an allergy.
  • This morning she's been for a short walk around the yard and done her business, although you'd swear she was drunk !
She's also lapped up her usual bowl of cold tea which she usually growls for when I put the kettle on first thing.
Close thing. The remaining pipettes are going to the vets for proper disposal.
  • You didn't by any chance worm her at the same time? Just asking in case she is a herding/pastoral breed or crossbreed, as they can react like that with some wormers.
  • Day 4 and she's almost 100 percent.
She's jumping about for her regular walks and she's growling for her cuppa tea.
The only major thing she's not doing is jumping into my lap for a fuss when invited, but you can see that she wants too. She's still a little bit drunken on her feet and I reckon she's a little bit scared of losing her footing.
Thought I'd lost her for a minute but I'm happy now that she's back.
  • Good to hear! Glad to know that she's enjoying her tea. Just don't tell my boys as they'll get jealous.
