A question about : Freeview via WiFi on a smart TV??

Hi, I currently pay for virgin & while it's great I really only use the channels I could get on freeview anyway. I have a smart TV (Samsung ue40h6400) - does anyone know if there is a way to get freeview via WiFi on a smart TV? I can already get a lot of on demand stuff through my TV with apps but would like to get live TV. Assume that an aerial is not an option if you respond, please.
Thanks in advance!

Best answers:

  • Nope - the ONLY way to receive Freeview is through an aerial. You can also view broadcast TV through cable (Virgin) or satellite (Sky, Freesat, free satellite) and some channels will stream over the internet (BBC1 & 2 - most programmes) but it's no replacement for 'free broadcast TV' that you're looking for.
  • You can even with a normal TV.
    Get one of these:
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/MK808-Androi...eywords=rk808b
And download this app onto it https://tvplayer.com/apps/ It has most of the freeview channels https://tvplayer.com/channels/.
  • Some wonky internet streams is not Freeview. It may suffice, certainly give it a go, but it's not Freeview!
Above advice can be followed on an Android phone or tablet without the hardware - try before you buy, and update us with the results...
  • if you can bring up the internet on your smart tv go here i watch most of freeview in the uk live section
    https://www.filmon.com/tv/live
  • OK , my ariel went down in the wind about 3 weeks ago , plan B went into operation
I had a raspberry Pi that I used as a media player (xbmc) , a quick google gave me "filmon" , now downloaded , and running my TV via a xbox remote
I actually get more freeview channels than what was available on the TV (Granada)
I can also watch 1000,s of new films free of charge as well
a raspberry Pi can be bought on ebay for as little as Ј23 , then you need a remote and receiver , Ј3.99 china or Ј7 UK , and a wifi dongle , about a Ј5 , + an 8 gig memory card.
the machine can be powered from the TV USB socket , the operating system is a free install and so are all the addons
  • yup , merican speel chuckers does that
  • I bought this last year from Amazon US:
    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00C37AZXK/...332200_TE_item
When it was only $7 (Ј5 including shipping) and I watch Freeview on my laptop in HD, even with the rubbish antenna included.
  • datlex - It is accurate. I'm talking about Freeview https://www.freeview.co.uk/ - that's free, digital terrestrial TV, with the Freeview TV guide and package of channels. Any device that receives this will have a Freeview logo on it. They all need an aerial to be plugged in.
You're talking about official and unofficial streams or catch up services.
Please understand my point that these are NOT the same thing.

  • Once you've cancelled VM, you will probably save the price of an aerial install in about 3 months...that's money saving.
  • Streaming sites have a habit of being taken down.
