I didn't know which forum to put this on, so here goes!

Freecycle is a worldwide online community of members who recycle and reuse their unwanted goods. In a nutshell it's the equivalent of eBay without the monetary transactions!

Members offer their unwanted goods up for collection to other members, everything offered *must* be free, appropriate for all ages, and legal. This IMO is a great way to prevent reusable stuff going to the landfill, whilst benefiting the community at large, and it doesn't cost a penny to join, recycle or take part in!

• Just to say...Freecycle is great!
  Really taking off here in West Yorkshire....yesterday someone was offering a load of home-made wine, (he needed the space apparently!)

  I can't vouch for how good it is because I haven't used it but if you're in Bristol and green-minded they have some useful links.
  I'm also going to point the people who want help with their clutter and hoarding in this direction. Some of us think it might help us part with our treasures if we knew they were going to a good home ...
  EDIT! Bristol's 'Swap it' scheme may not be the same thing as freecycle, especially in that you can say you want to swap your item for something completely different, or for a donation to charity, but when I last looked there were quite a few 'free to good home' items there as well. But I think it's similar enough to count!

• Check via the link in freecycles post above, it tells you for the UK.
• There's also a corporate equivalent called Global Hand. www.globalhand.org. Yet this deals with bulk donations and matches surplus with those addressing need. What a great scheme a sort of humanitarian Ebay.
  So why not get all the corporates to do this too?

• Ah but Sue, if you get to grips with it you get an email every time someone posts an offer on the Bristol group. What I like is that you dont have to go to the Yahoo group to find out whats on offer, it just drops in your inbox. I must admit usually I dont like yahoo groups and refuse to join them!

  If you look under the International option from the mail page, then you should get a list of all the ones available worldwide - including the ones in the UK.Hope that helps!

  I have just had clarification from Martin on freecycle. Due to site regulations, we can't unfortunately allow a freecycle board to be set up within MSE. It would fall into the same category as selling items and could, unfortunately be open to abuse. Martin is happy enough for it to be discussed here, but that's as far as it goes I'm afraid.
  Please respect Martins wishes on this and DON'T post any items which you want to swap or are looking for.

• I came across another site similar to Freecycle the other day, https://thefreebay.org - only its sole focus is the UK (being a UK site) - very new, but they had the idea to allow image attachments with 'Offered' items, something which freecycle definitely lacks. Worth checking out.
