A question about : Free smoke alarms merged

Hi folks,

I was surprised to find that the fire service will install smoke alarms in your house free of charge when you book a fire safety check with them. They will take you through a questionnaire and discuss fire safety - installing smoke alarms (including 10 year batteries) if you don't have any. All VERY well worth it.

Of course - this really comes out of your taxes, but it's nice to see where some of taxes are going, especially for such an important and potentially life saving service.

I don't know if this is specific to where I live (Rugby Borough and Warwickshire county councils).

  • Most Fire Services do this, check out your local services' web site and you can usually find a referral link or a freephone number.
  • I took up this offer when i moved into my current house.
I have to say they were brilliant, installed 2 smoke alarms (1 on each level of the house) and then they walked around my house with me, showed me the best exits if my route was blocked and pointed out any safety risks.
After having a house fire at my previous house, i have a real bee in my bonnet about fire safety, and i got the fire service to visit all my friends and relatives.
I really do recommend that if you havent already done so, please get in touch with your local fire service, and get smoke alarms fitted, they do save lives.
  • And they last 10 years.
  • Everyone take this up!!! What can you lose? You could lose your life if you dont...
  • and you get fireman round your house!!!!!!! they came round to me in their fire engine to fit my alarms!
  • Have signed up. just moved house many thanks oohh fireman in uniform added bonus
  • I can whole heartedly recommend this , a freebie that could save your life. Smoke alarms are so important . Make sure you get some and test the ones you have on a regular basis. If you can't find a number on your local fire service website then ring your local fire station they will probably be able to give you a number to call.
  • I can confirm this is correct, I work for a Fire and Rescue Service and all Services should offer this service. There is normally a freephone number on the website for your home County.
  • There is also a phone number and if you are on medication that makes you sleep and you fall asleep smoking they will give you a free bedding pack with quilt, pillows, throw, blanket, pillow cases, quilt cover in. The number for the northwest ie liverpool/ wirral 0800 731 5958 assume it's the same for the whole country not free from some mobiles like o2
  • I got this service after there had been a house fire in the next road. They said it was standard now for them to go round and check houses in the neighourhood and install alarms for free if they weren't present already.
  • cor blimey.
i think they do this all over, they came to my mums in gloucestershire when we had a fire when i was staying (a week before she got flooded!!), and they did my house in herts. i must say, our firemen weren't up to the standard that they are in glos (looks-wise). incidentally, my mum is now seeing one of the ones that came to help out with her smoke alarms day after the fire...
  • We got offered this recently, but a friendly fireman who called around promoting the service. It was excellent - really useful advice and he ended up fitting three free smoke alarms (plus we already have one old one).
  • Really useful, thanks!
My mum and sister have the same fetish for firemen!
    Will let them know!
They will take all the firealarms down 3 mins before they come, just so they stay longer. (Not Really...... Don't waste emergency services time..... I was joking) lol
    Thanks OP!
  • Many thanks for posting, but it's been posted here...
