A question about : foreign adoption and uk law?

İ have finally got to adopt my teenage Turkish 'daughter'. İ have lived in Turkey for 8 years but still hold uk citizenship. My step daughter is 17 and i am wondering how we stand in getting favour with uk border...either now or further down the line....she has dreams of going to University in the uk and living in my home there...İ pay tax and Nİ in the uk on an occupational pension and voluntary ni.

  • Hi
I think you are going to have difficulties with the 3 year residency rules https://www.gov.uk/student-finance/who-qualifies if you have been living outside the EEA and Switzerland for the last 3 years.
UKCISA might be able to help you.
  • one of the reasons for this late adoption was my imagining difficulties about her residing in the uk if she decided she wanted to.....she can sort her own duration of residency out for herself when she is there!...also i worried they might stop her travelling to the UK because after 18 she would be an adult and not connected to me !!...just for holidays!
  • You really need some advice. Presumably you can now seek a British passport for her?
If she works in the UK for three years she could claim to be an independant student; otherwise residence is usually on the parents' place of residence. Getting taxed on a UK pension and having a house there does not necessarily make you normally resident.
And frankly it would be a LOT cheaper to study in many of the other EU countries that teach in English.
  • İ have a home there and family which would appeal to my daughter....plus a UK degree is highly valued in Turkey. İ know we can't het a passport for her without me resding in the uk permanmently but the measures i have taken now will hopefully give her some sort of 'footthold' on maybe making some life there...she gets a E111 which is a no small thing here because she can go to Europe with cover
  • You have to understand that it is illegal in the UK to give any sort of immigration advice unless you are registered with the Home Office; too many folk used to pay too much for lousy advice.
Have you checked with the embassy to see if she can get a passport or at least ILE?
  • what is İLE??.....i have read the passport regulatşons and we don't comply!..we have a commision here in the city but it is manned by Turks and is quite useless!
  • Indefinite leave to enter

  • She could look into international scholarships to help with funding.
I did a quick check of the number of turkish students at Unis in Scotland - they tend to have tiny numbers, no more than a handful but this does mean there are small communities from Turkey at many Unis across the country. Example
