A question about : Firefly

I rented a car from the Faro airport branch of Firefly (who seem to be affiliated with Hertz) while on holiday in Portugal in May 2014. The car was returned at the agreed time in an undamaged state and I paid the previously agreed balance. I explicitly asked the assistant if the owed amount was fully settled (because I'm always confused and surprised by car rental hidden charges) and he assured me it was.

I have since however received a letter asking me for a further Ђ74.82. The details of the charges are written in Portuguese which I cannot understand. They have also threatened legal action if they don't receive the payment.

There are no details on how to pay the outstanding debt but I am reluctant to pay anyway because I don't know what the charge is for and i don't think it's fair. I am also partly worried that it is a scam or is leading to a bad credit score somehow.

Does anyone have any experience of Firefly sending follow-up invoices?

Thanks

Best answers:

  • Use Google translate to find out what the charge is for.
  • The only way this could affect your credit file is if they win a court case against you in the UK and you refuse to pay up. I'm surprised they didn't just help themselves to it from your credit card though - it's what car hire firms normally seem to do. In fact, I have a policy of cancelling my card after using it for car hire if I have any reason to suspect the car hire firm might try to take some more money.
