A question about : Fined Ј275 for watching YOUTUBE

I've just been fined Ј275 by the BBC for watching YOUTUBE. I had no idea you needed a TV licence for a computer to watch other peoples home made movies. I've also been told that you need a TV licence for a DVD player by the courts, but DVDs are purchased and paid for, why do people need to pay again? I'M STUNNED!

Best answers:

That says it all, in the first box.
  • You should only need to pay for a TV license if you are watching or recording live tv. BBC have by their own admittance said you don't need a tv watch programs online after they have been broadcast (here), also here in the second paragraph of part 1.
    Something sounds very fishy here.
  • You don't need a TV licence to watch someone's home-made videos on youtube.
  • This has been discussed many times, both here and in the Techie Stuff board. I seem to remember that you need a license to WATCH or RECORD a TV transmission AS IT IS BEING BROADCAST. (And indeed the link from visidigi confirms this). You do NOT need a license simply to USE a PC or DVD player, even if it is to watch PRE-RECORDED stuff. (In this case the link is misleading).
OP - WHO fined you? The BBC can't fine you. Were you taken to court?
  • something does not ring true with the 1st post as said you dont get fined for watching youtube by BBC for home made movies
  • Did you plead guilty ?
  • What a nice story.
  • How would the BBC even know if someone was watching youtube videos?
The only way that they could trace someone would be if they logged on to the BBC iplayer website and their IP address was logged then their details were obtained from the ISP concerned.
  • The English are so compliant. Thats why they get carpped on every time...
  • I would tell BBC where to go the bunch of morons that they are.
Its not like there is an acceptance box you need to tick to agree to watch anything no does BBC Iplayer. So send the fine back with a letter thats what i would do.
  • The BBC can't fine anyone - only a court could do that. The OP needs to post some more details of how they claim to be fined for watching someone's home-made movies on youtube because they didn't have a TV licence.
  • If someone has sent you a letter or something claiming that then they aren't the BBC! Despite which the BBC don't directly deal with TV Licenses - TV Licensing do!
