A question about : Filing US tax return
My wife has been working in the US on an O1 visa since last June and needs to file a tax return. I think she will need an accountant who deals with ex-pats as she still earns some income from her consulting business in the UK, which she pays tax on in the UK and would need to avoid paying tax in the US on this as none of the work is invoiced through or carried out in the US.
Does anyone have any experience of this and have some pointers as to what she should do/watch out for?
Thanks.
Best answers:
- Definitely get an accountant who prepares US tax returns. There are plenty in the UK, if needed.
You've given minimal information here (there are a number of factors to consider), but if your wife is tax resident in the US, or a US national or Green Card holder, then she will need to declare her worldwide income in the US and claim a foreign tax credit in respect of any UK tax due for the UK business. - American Tax Returns are best left to specialists - there are some excellent ones here in the UK.
