A question about : Family& Friends Railcard

Hi

I recently bought a F&F Railcard. I've used it once to buy tickets for an upcoming trip to London, with 2 adults and a child and had no problems.

I am now trying to use it for a trip to Leeds for 4 adults and 1 child. It gives me a price on National Rail, but then when it goes through to the Northern Rail website it pops up to say that the railcard will not work for all adults on the journey and can only be used for 2 adults.

On the F&F railcard website it advises that the card can be used for up to 4 adults as long as they are travelling with a child. Obviously the 'upto' is the get out clause but I can't seem to find any info on restrictions, times or operators etc where you can use it for four adults? Is it because I am trying to prebook, am i better buying tickets on the day? (It would be the same price more or less to buy on the day)

Has anyone ever used it for four adults? or does anyone have more info on how you can?

Thanks.

Best answers:

  • It's because the Northern Rail website isn't much good - try another one
But it should be the same price on the day.
  • Yes I noticed it wasn't much good, can I book it elsewhere? I looked on national rail and it re-directed me to Northern Rail. It's a local-ish journey for us and only northern rail do the route, so I just presumed you had to book it with them but I'll take a look at trainline etc now to see if it lets me.
If I turn up and pay on the day do you think I will have the same issue regarding the railcard or will they let me use it with 4 adults and one child?
  • You can buy the ticket on any rail website - just avoid one that charges fees (ie don't use thetrainline)
    I normally use https://www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk/
Though I am wondering if your station is a Metro station whether it can be used there?
  • Thanks for your help, just looked and we can buy them from there and collect at the station in the morning. No it's not a metro station, we are in lancashire so have to cross over the border before we get to a metro station!
